Some time ago when I was looking to build a belt grinder, I saw somewhere can't exactly recall where or who, but general rule of thumb was 1hp/inch of belt width. I built a 2"x72" and put a 2hp on it, I found for most things it was plenty, but some heavy grinding coulda used a bit more. Ed
