    Yes, it's tradition and buyers enjoy choosing the shield. The purpose is the same as the inlays one would see on a fine old Kentucky rifle. It's a sign of quality and it adds interest.

    Matt, you got it right. I use end mills anywhere from 3/8" to 1/2" so the relief will accommodate the entire flat area from the tang to the plunge.
