    I Think I'm Done w/ Water Stones

Yea, I've changed the way l sharpen with the 4K stone. I use it prior to the final edging on some kitchen knives. These knives have very small bevels, less than 1/32" wide, and dig into the stone otherwise.

    Sub-zero questions

No. I'm just saying there is some testing that indicates cold treatment/cryo doesn't always lead to better edge holding. Bfc member Hardheart did some CATRA testing a couple years ago and compared some high alloy steels, S30V and some others. He also compared the same steel with and without...

    Sub-zero questions

Cryo/cold treatments don't always improve things. Wouldn't hurt to test vs a blade that's not been cold treated.

    I Think I'm Done w/ Water Stones

Yes, at various times the stones are lapped. I don't lap them every time I use them, as they don't wear that fast.

    8670 steel verses 80CrV2 Steel

8670 would be tougher, 80CrV2 would have higher wear resistance, BUT it would be extremely difficult to tell the difference in a blind test between the 2. In other words, if you had 2 blades ground the same and they weren't labeled or marked which steel was which, it would be nearly impossible...

    Aeb-l??

I was mostly responding to Ken's comment about heat treating twice.

    Aeb-l??

Heat treating again without annealing first can lead to excessive grain growth. The mechanisms that control it on the first hardening cycle are not all there in subsequent hardening cycles. It can be done, but one needs to be very careful and have very good control of temperature.

Grind Before or after Heat Treat?; Lessons Learned

You may well have a knife with a softer edge, but those hardness tests don't prove that. You'd need to cross section the blade and test spine to edge along the cut. This requires mounting and polishing, and some specialized equipment if you want to test close to the edge. Testing on sloped...

Stainless steel Damascus: elemental migration as measured on scanning electron micros

Can't believe this thread hadn't had more traffic. Excellent information regarding welding of Damascus and element migration. Note how slowly the elements move. This spent hours only a couple hundred degrees below melting and the concentrations changed over only a couple thousandths of an inch.

Stainless steel Damascus: elemental migration as measured on scanning electron micros

Good stuff there. So in several hours near melting, the nickel depleted from the 304, and migrated to the AEB-L, but only over a distance of about 0.003" or from about 75 to 160 microns on the scale in the picture? Also, it appears Mn and Cr move either at very similar rates or move together...

    Steel attributes question?

Which material property to look for depends on use of the knife. You'll need high abrasive wear resistance for cutting things like used carpet. You need high toughness for things like chopping knives, bush knives, machetes, etc. High strength allows a thinner edge for cutting without edge...

Using Wooden Pins for Knife Handles

Sounds like I should just redo the handles that are on it unless I just have to see for myself. It would be more work to do it with the wooden pins, but if there isn't an advantage other than the appearance I want, it sounds like I'll be doing the flared brass tubes later anyway with no return.

Using Wooden Pins for Knife Handles

This seems a good place to post this, as I've never tried it before and haven't seen anyone who has. I have an old knife that I want to put a new handle on and spice up some, and wanted to try wooded pins. Has anyone tried this before? It's basically an old Green River pattern Cold Steel...

    Did I mess it up?

What kind of tests/results did the paperwork/reports show? It's interesting that your advice on tempering is so different from your advice on hardening (2 hours minimum vs. no soak recommended).

    Did I mess it up?

I was actually suggesting Kev use 1 hour tempers instead of 2 hour tempers, but still 2 of them. Was this knife intended to undergo the JS test?
