If you feel obligated to use up flashlight batteries going through the big trash in the middle of the night, look for exotic wood for handles.

    Sharp beak knife

Thanks for the comments. I love making knives and as I have never been to a maker's shop, this forum and a couple of others have been my way of learning. I've got some more bone soaking in oil right now, so hopefully next go round the dye will penetrate a little deeper.

    Sharp beak knife

Here is my latest file knife. Just under 9" in lenth with bone scales and stainless bolts and nickel silver tube. I tried to do some jigging and dyed the scales, but didn't prepare the bone ahead of time so the dye didn't penetrate too deep. Blade is flat ground and finished with a convex edge.

    Log in trouble

OK I give up. I log in, and depending on where I go in the forum it looks like I'm logged out so I can't post. Is it the forum, or did I log in from the wrong place? Trying to log in on the screens where it looks like I'm logged out doesn't work. Just returns blank boxes for user name and...

    First Neck Knives

Here are two little neck knives I made out of old files. The knife with the osage orange scales with micarta pins. The other one has rosewood scales with nickel silver pins and tube. The one on the right is hollow ground which was a first for me.

    Alligator Gar Knife

Charlie/Bootstrap thanks for the comments. VaughnT Thanks again. I tried to rub as much dye off as possible with a paper towel. I will try scrubbing in hot soapy water. Every knife so far leaves its mark on me. This one left a half inch cut in my left index finger. I won't be so quick to...

    Harbor Freight Surface Grinder??

Stabber, I posted and didn't see your comment. I may have to buy a good used grinder, with a lot of life left on it. I am not going to buy a surface grinder twice that is for sure. Jon

    Harbor Freight Surface Grinder??

What should I expect if I buy a benchtop surface grinder from Harbor Freight? Anybody have one? It is around 300 bucks (was 900), another hundred for a magnetic chuck.
