Pivot Lap Search

Hey guys,
Does anyone know where a person might buy a pivot lap? I've only been able to find one place that sells em, you guessed it, USA KNIFEMAKERS, and the Boss is sold out of them. I thought someone around might make them or have an extra they might be willing to sell.
Thanks guys,
TT

USA Knifemakers is the only place I've seen them. I use mine all the time. It's definitely worth the investment. I'd give them a call to see when they might be restocking them. They are really great to work with.

Thanks Brandant. I just got a notice that USA Knifemakers just got them back in stock. I do appreciate your reply.

Glad they're coming back in stock. They really make getting those precise lengths on pivots and bushings a breeze.

Mr. Craft,
I'm a way off from actually needing to use one, but I'm a firm believer in having what you need to complete a knife (or any other project) before you start. In all honesty, I started a slip joint a couple of years ago and it got put aside due to family responsibilities, My interest in owning one of the pivot laps goes deeper than lapping a pivot bushing for the pivot pins. I have a number of uses for it rolling around in my head.

I'll answer any questions I can on them. I use a pivot lap routinely when I am making a folder.

The advantages are:
You get fairly square ends on a pivot or bushing. Much better than trying to hand grind them down.
You can lap to .0005" tolerance consistently which is where you want to be for a bushing set up. A machine shop production bali maker I know uses them to get to .0002" tolerance on their bushings as a production standard. He makes bali's in the hundreds and can't get a closer tolerance other than hand lapping using one.
It's not a terribly expensive tool for the precision you can achieve.

disadvantages:
It's a manual, slow process.
Only works for barrel pivots, barrel stand offs or bushings.

I'll try and get a short video done on them.
