Knives ready to go

That looks like a Philadelphia hockey stick, those come in handy on those dark, quite streets. ;)

All kidding aside, those are a bunch of great looking knives Von.

That would be perfect for harvesting sugar cane. We grow cane and make syrup at Thanksgiving every year. I will be forging one of those shortly thanks for sharing it.

I worked in the sugar cane fields in Australia for a couple of seasons driving haulout and one one place where there was trial planting that we hand cut a small plot with a cane knife ( as it was all done years ago) like this one with a light blade for swinging all day. Some of the knives had a bend about 3 inches from the end of the handle so the blade cut more horrizontal to the ground and gained an extra inch of cane on some of the stalks in the bunch and more cane meant more sugar and better return over the whole paddock

The scrub slasher I have shown as a 3/8 thick blade along the spine and a 3 ft handle, so from my experience it would be really unsuitable for cutting cane as it is way too heavy and unwieldy for the job..
It was used to like a long handled, long bladed, light axe for cutting heavy scrub where there were up to 2 inch limbs and trunks and with the scrub generally being covered in spikes the long handle and heavier blade was needed to get into where the branches started.

Our cane is normally weeded up pretty well and I do not want to have to bend over so much so maybe I will make something like a long handle cane knife. Last year I forged an Iklwa just before cane time and I used it to top and cut. It worked surprisingly well but I think I made the others nervous.

Post pics of your Iklwa Chris. We are always interested in seeing what has been made
