1st Damascus Blade

If ya'll remember a while back I forged up my first damascus billet. This forum really NEEDS (or I need to learn how) a way to find "all threads started by". There's a way to find all posts commented on. Anyway - I forged up the Damascus billet, and finally got around to finishing the knife for the wife. This is a low layer count, 11 layers of 1095 and 15N20 with a .003" thick layer of pure nickel between each layer of carbon. I drew it out flat and I think I lost a couple of layers due to scale build up. I can't see as many layers as I put in it. Final thickness on blade is .100" at bolster with a distal taper to point.

This is my very first Wa type handle - just wanted to try one. Wood is stabilized curly maple with African Blackwood. The wife wanted brass bolster and spacer, so that's what she got. I drilled a 5/16" hole thru the Blackwood, brass spacer, and into maple and epoxied a wooden dowel to provide some strength. With the tang going thru I suspect the wooden dowel isn't needed.

So got to ask what is a Wa type handle???

Would that be anything like hidden/partial tang?? Or is that a reference to a Japanese style handle? I don't follow all the Japanese refrences!!
 
Thanks for nice words Cliff - Yes, the Wa type handle is what is referred to as the Japanese style kitchen knife handle - OR - that is my understanding anyway. It is a hidden tang (just realized you can't really see that from the two views I showed. I don't think the blade is typical Japanese, but that's the type wife wants, and "happy wife, happy life" {g}
 
Ken , that's a beauty and a keeper for sure. I'm betting that your wife is pretty happy with it , too. Cause as you know , if the wife ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.
 
Nice looking Sir!! There is a way to look up your posts its under the (on my phone) top left hand side 3 bars, click it and there will be a drop down menu one of the listings says "your threads" click that and all the threads you started will be there!
 
It turned out very nice. Good luck finding what you want in one place. Google is your friend. So is YouTube. Keep up the nice work.
 
Thank you all for the nice words. I've enjoyed the forge welding - I never even considered I could do forge welding. I got to reading some, helpful posts from ya'll here- darn, it works! I will be playing around with some more.

Thanks, I knew there was something somewhere, I found it before, but just couldn't think the last couple of times I looked for it. Easy to find, right there under "find threads" drop down.

First off, your welds look real good not so easy to do on your first billet you must have spent some time studying the process. Second, the knife and handle are awesome good job.
