new project...ivory cracked

I was hammering a rivet on the sheath and the knife fell. It only fell 8 inches off of a box and onto the table. I picked it up and saw this. The ivory spacer cracked.

The harpoon was completed enough to use. It hasn't seen meat yet. But I was carrying it to experiment with the type of sheath I want to make for it. My name is on the guard only in case it ever fell out of the sheath without me knowing. I'm going to file the guard and finish the handle some more.
There's a little out of proportion on it too. I was thinking to grind the blade to match the mistake I made shaping the handle.

Good work on the knives - you're doing good work.

Bummer on that mammoth ivory spacer - will it be hard to remove? You might try sanding it wet with CA or thin epoxy to allow the sanding dust to fill the crack. It might come really close to completely hiding the crack, and with thin CA wicking into the crack give some strength to the spacer. If you put a couple of locating pins thru the spacer it should still be plenty strong with a good repair to the crack. AND, with mammoth ivory it's not unusual to have a few cracks due to the ancient age of the stuff.

I'll probably give that a shot. I'll post another picture if I get it. Thanks also for the good words.
