    Old scratch knives

I like them all, but the middle one looks slick.

    carbide straightening

I did what Taz mentioned. Profiled, heat treated, then ground the bevels. I was close to done on the rough grinding when I noticed the warp. I will definitely keep a closer eye on that in the future and won't try to straighten again with coarse marks in the blade. Thanks all. My first go around...

    carbide straightening

I left mine a little thick for that reason. I had a couple divots hanging out, but I got them out.

    carbide straightening

Yeah, it's good to know it can be a problem. Thanks Ken. I wondered if 50 grit scratches would increase the potential for breaking but I was ok. But I bet deep scratches could play in as a factor.

    carbide straightening

I primarily use carbon steel, but a customer asked for a batch in stainless. I decided on magnacut because there was a lot of information on it, I couldn't see how I could really go wrong with it. Anyway, I got them back from heat treating and they all had a small bow. I successfully temper...

    meteorite knife

I saw a meteorite slab in a rock and fossil shop a few years ago. It was about 2 1/2 ft in diameter and etched to reveal a lattice pattern. I wondered what metal was in it, and how it formed that pattern naturally. Beautiful work.

I agree with you Ken. I recently added a misting system and wondered why I didn't do this sooner. It is much easier to control the heat, especially as you mentioned on thinner knives. It also seems like using coolant is a machining standard for the most part. I have the exact same set up...

knife forged in mimetic san mai

Are those quartz inclusions? I would test for serpentine/jade with my knife. The serpentine would scratch. I started doing that with anything that had a glassy appearance. Stones that are harder than the hardness of my knives I only use diamond abrasives. But I noticed some of my grinder...

knife forged in mimetic san mai

I have used non-stabilized serpentine (black jade?) and decided to have a couple scales of it stabilized. I also have a jasper/agate/chert in process. These are glassy, high silica, so I don't think they'd need it, but decided to try it anyway on the serpentine. I doubt if there will be...

knife forged in mimetic san mai

Yep. I have some black and white marble also that I am planning to use. I believe it is from Portugal. I picked it up from a friend overseas and carried it home half way around the world. Any thoughts on stabilizing stone for knife handles? I have done it - just curious...

    Low and Knotty

Looks good - it's got a lot to look at even with the low layer.

    opinions wanted.

It looks similar to a design I'm working on. I like your take. I had a hard time envisioning how the handle would look so I appreciate your pictures/post. I think a tapered would add to the overall flow.

    yakut knives

I do want to keep this one. It doesn't seem like it, but sharpening this kind of edge is pretty easy.

    yakut knives

Here's some finished shots of the knife alone. Still need to decide on any type of cord wrap. I also need to build the sheath. The antler finished up nice. This is Fuller's varnish. It could use some sanding, but I want to move on to #2 sometime soon.

    Stone WIP

starting at about 6:00 - about the difficulty of telling the difference between types of chalcedony. I do a scratch test when I'm rockhounding. I'm hoping it's a rare color of jade.....
