    Checkering a Knife Handle

I'm getting kinda excited over this checkering idea. I've designed a knife based on the hand grip of a Browning A5 "Round Knob" shotgun. The first picture is the knife with an image of the checkering. The second one has a proposed guard that might go on the one above. I don't know if the...

    Checkering a Knife Handle

Now that I've got Hamons down pat :001_rolleyes: I've got the hots to checker a knife handle just kike a shotgun or rifle. It would be simple enough to make the handle out of Walnut. I would know what to expect with Walnut because I have checkered a set of 1911 grips before. But, I'm thinking...

    Handle Liners

Looking for some opinions on handle liners. What is the best material? How thick should it be? Do you epoxy it to the handle material before you drill it and shape it? Any other thoughts. Thanks, Wallace

    An attempt at a Hamon

Thanks guys. What happened was, and I do it pretty often when I am grinding after heat treat, I ground the edge too thin. I get to concentrating so hard on getting my grind totally flat and uniform with regard to getting out the previous belt scratches that I just make too many passes and...

    An attempt at a Hamon

Bad day in Las Cruces. Burned the edge on this knife Bad and had to toss it - kinda lost my concentration. Us old guys call 'em Brain F***s. Happens way too often around here. Never got to the point of seeing if I had a Hamon or not. Cut out another one and got it all the way to clay up before...

    An attempt at a Hamon

UPDATE Got through the quench with the blade still intact. Quenched in brine for 2 seconds (no ping) rested 2 seconds and then into Canola. Clay held on in the oil for a while and then fell off. Went immediately into temper - 2 cycles at 350 and cool in the oven to room temp. The knife is...

    Snakewood finish

Yes, as far as I know it is so dense and oily that it doesn't need anything. Put it in a bucket of water and see if it floats - ironwood won't I doubt Snakewood will either or if it does just barely. Use it and finish with Tru Oil, it"ll be fine but beware of the McCaffery Tru Oil finger (See my...

    An attempt at a Hamon

You know, John< I think you're right. I fall into the trap of thinking that the Hamon line will follow the clay line exactly even when I know it won't. Shouldn't be too big of a problem though because I'm probably going to ping the knife during HT anyway ;). By the way, did you ever read the...

    Snakewood finish

John, I've heard some of the stories but as oily as it is I can't imagine how it could dry out that much in a short time and it sure as the dickens won't absorb water. My guess is that it wears just about the same as any of the other stabilized wood we use.(I feel like an expert on Snakewood...
