    W-2 and 1075

I love Kevin's answer. If you remember the old joke, "It just don't take him long to look at a horseshoe." One other question: Say you pre-heat your oven to 1475 and you have 3 knives to treat. Once you put 'em in there how long does it take to get them up to 1475 and how do you know? Because...

    W-2 and 1075

So, I think I have just about boiled it down to using only 2 high carbon steels: W-2 and 1075. I don't have a heat treat oven but I think I have controlling temperature in my forge down to pretty close tolerances using a baffle and a thermocouple. For those of you who do use a heat treat oven...

I have a problem a wood addiction problem

I know I have posted this before because I have the same sickness and many people would question the sanity of a person who goes to the lengths I do to secure beautiful knife scales. Such as traveling all the way to Scotland to secure a source of the Wych Elm Burl that I have posted below of...

Diversity is the spice of life. (Didn't somebody say that?)

I like doing kitchen knives but I just don't do too many of them because I have to charge more for them. They have so much more surface area on the blade and can as much as double the time necessary for meto hand sand the blade. This is a Japanese Gyuto with a Wa handle. The blade is 10" long...

    Wych Elm Burl from Scotland

I was in Scotland recently and established a contact in southern Scotland that can supply me with Wych Elm Burl. The first batch he agreed to trade for a custom knife and it was waiting on me when I got home. I posted some pics a while back and will repost them here. As usual, when you really...

    Tru Oil vs. Ca

Hey guys, Can I build up 7 or 8 coats of Tru Oil on a handle, let it dry properly (say 7 - 10 days), sand it to 1500 grit and buff it to a very high gloss like I can Ca or will it break down with the heat of the buffer? Thanks, Wallace

    Never built a Karambit

This was a really fun build and the Hamon turned out good. May do another one of these. Haven't decided on a sheath yet. What do you think, leather or Kydex? Love to hear your comments. Thanks, Wallace The specs are: Blade material: W-2 Blade Finish: Satin Finish with an active Hamon OAL: 9.5”...

    My Buyer Bailed

Be my guest. Thank Gahagan for the blade shape and me for the handle design but I'm sure somebody has made it before. Nothing new on this earth. Thanks, Wallace

    Wootz steel from India

Any of you guys ever bought and used any of this stuff? I read up on it and it sounded pretty interesting. I'm thinking about buying a piece and giving it a try. Anybody know what the heat treat formula is. Can't try it until I know that. Thanks, Wallace

    My Buyer Bailed

Thanks for the kind words. As often happens in a world created by God, this cloud had a silver lining. Sold it for more than the original price so I paid back by putting the guys down payment in the plate this Sunday. Told the guy so he could feel good about himself but I don't think he did. :)...

What's going on in your shop?

Daniel, I'm curious. Why is your hole in the brass in the shape of the blade and not just in the shape of the tang so the blade will just butt up against the brass. Looks good and I love the challenge and artistic requirements of a Puukko. I love the wood and the leather and a Puukko give me a...

    My Buyer Bailed

This is one of the reasons I don't take orders. A friend got me to take this order from a friend of his. 1/2 up front and 1/2 on completion. Well it's completed and he hasn't got the money. It was one of those, "Well, I'll take it if I have to but go ahead and sell it if you can. And, oh, by the...

    Show me your Puukkas

Good Sunday morning and may God bless you all. Just thinking about Puukkos this morning - I don't know why. Puukkos are some of the most highly finished knives that I see today. Even the ones that are not "Show Knives" are more elaborate than other types of knives. The other thing is nobody...

Heat treating with a gas forge

SUCCESS!!!!!!! So here is what I did. I bought a 12" X 3" steel pipe (Baffle). I ground the blade to 120 grit. I found a ceramic "condom" to fit over the end of my thermocouple. I did not heat my Parks. I put the blade inside the baffle pipe with the protected thermocouple and slowly heated the...

Heat treating with a gas forge

As always, you guys are the best. Going to have another go at it this weekend and I'll get back to you. Here are my take-a-ways: 1. Get a baffle 2. Grind to at least 120 3. Don't heat the parks 50 4. Don't let the thermocouple sensor touch anything 5. Don't soak - take it to 1465* and quench...

    Philosophical Quandary....copying someone else's work.

Whoa, Boss. I hope you didn't misunderstand my post. I meant no offence by it at al and I certainly hope we are buddiesl. All I meant was that with a very few limited exceptions( Lovelace for one, maybe) you probably couldn't patent or copyright any aspect of a knife's design because they are...

    Philosophical Quandary....copying someone else's work.

"You can make a drop dead stone cold copy of anything, including a knife, for your own use. Selling it is something completely different." If its a song or a written document with a copyright or a high tech item with a patent I agree but when it's a knife, I totally disagree. Here is a picture...
