    should I even sell this?

Another tip is to not be afraid to saw off the scales and start over. Yea, it's hard to "waste" handle material, but the way I look at it, a good piece of steel that you put all that work into deserves to look it's best "forever". I am always glad when I decide to take off the scales and redo...

Steel Asphalt cutting blade for knife making question

ACL, you could make a useable knifes out them but without knowing the exact type of HS steel you are guessing on heat treating, edge holding, and corrosion resistance, just to name a few. I personally would not use them and would pick up some good carbon steel such as 1084 or 52100 that can be...

    Western G46's

Thanks Laurence. Didn't know it was a 'recon' - was this knife issued to recon in particular or was it a general nickname? Hadn't heard that one.

    Western G46's

Here is the big brother, a G46-8, newly restored. The handle and butt were very rusted but blade was good shape as was stored in sheath apparently which kept blade clean. This is a great large knife design, simple no nonsense.

What is the ideal size of wheel for hollow grinding?

I have been getting nice finishes on larger knives with a serrated 14" wheel using 3x132 cork belts, green then white compound. The stiffness of the cork belt allows for the finish work. I like the large wheels because you can get a "taller" grind with minimal undercutting. I started with a 10"...

    Hardness question

J I would ask for it to be in the 57-58rc range if want to do a lot of bone chopping. 440c is a very tough steel and wouldn't worry too much about chipping on bones in the kitchen though. If ask for any less hardness than that you will start sacrificing edge holding, which goes down hill rapidly...
