    New 2x72 grinder

Did my first bevel today. Can't believe how fast grinding was compared to the 1x30.

Here you are. I didn't bother to move the work rest for the pic with the large wheel.

    New 2x72 grinder

I have my new Reeder grinder up and running. Man this thing is great. Haven't had a chance to use it on a blade yet but I did bevel a piece of scrap. I can't believe how much time it cut from the old 1x30. I have used it for bolster material and a few other things. I just love it. I'd post...

    WTB 2x72 belt grinder

I don't get around here often but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm looking to get a 2x72 belt grinder. I'd like a quality unit, with variable speed, it can be new or used. My price range is under 2k. Please PM me if you can help. Thanks

    Tooln's 1st knife

It feels very good in the hand and well balanced. I've made several more but haven't posted as I've been to busy. I'd post more pics but resizing them isn't my thing.

    Tooln's first etch

Kind of a home made unit. I used a dc power supply set to 10 amps and 18 volts. I had a stencil made and used vinegar and salt solution.

    Tooln's first etch

I also thought about a stamp. But cost turned me away, also stamping without a press isn't my idea of getting quality.

    Tooln's first etch

I've been waiting for a stencil so I can etch my blades. They came today and here are my first 2 attempts. The one on the right is my 2nd try and it turned out a lot better. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the same knife or a different one on my next stencil. This was done on a test blade.

    Tooln's 1st knife

Wouldn't you know grandkids changed the plans. The wife wasn't even off the phone and I was setting up. Finished my first heat treat and the blade has been in the tempering oven for 15 minutes now. Heat treat went well & the blade is hard. It was cool watching the steel turn colors and go...

    Tooln's 1st knife

I've at about a dime's thickness maybe just a little thinner. Thanks guys. Hoping to do it tomorrow. Was planning on today but the grand kids threw that plan out.

    Tooln's 1st knife

Another question, how close to sharp should I go before heat treat?

    Tooln's 1st knife

Yesterday I ran across an old pizza stone I haven't used in a few years. I cut it to fit inside the toaster oven. This should help keep a more even temperature.

    Tooln's 1st knife

So I'm getting ready to heat treat/quench my first blade and it's from 1095. I have 2 questions. First how long do you leave the blade in the oil ((I'm using canola)? Second how soon after quenching can you file test? Does the blade need to cool or can it be done as soon as you come out of...

    Tooln's 1st knife

Well I voided all warranties today on the toaster oven. Well not that it had any because it was a used one that I bought. I got my temperature controller hooked up and I can now run a PID loop to hold temperature. The only thing I don't like about this controller is it displays in centigrade and...

    Tooln's 1st knife

My metal is 3/16 and my oak is 1/4. I plan on holes to lighten (before heat treat) and also give the epoxy surface area. I could get by with just the oak but wanted to gain just a little thickness for finishing.
