    Forge Welding Question

If you watch some of the old Japanese (and maybe not so old) videos of the masters making laminated steel, they do exactly what John said. When we make bloomery into "good" steel, we do the same. + 1 on what Ed said about buying tools.

    My youngest apprentice

OK, got the bottles filled, heated up the ribbon forge (OH yeah, you heard it, I got one. I said RIBBON FORGE) Using the squaring dies, the first weld compression. Warner will compress the canister in several small presses alternating corners. Here's a big fish I caught this summer. 32 inch...

    My youngest apprentice

I have one that is 71 yrs old, one that's been to the middle east 5 times, been shot and blowed up too many times, one that's about thirty five and will be a pretty good knife maker, my little brother, who's gunna make some pretty nice chef knives someday and the 15 year old. Besides them, I...

Warner came in on Saturday, we welded a handle to his canister and started the forge to pre-heat it. It was just about up to forge welding temperature so we put the box in. and guess what happened, we ran out of propane. Shoot, all the bottles in the shop were empty. Nothing else to do but...

    Milling machine help

I have several milling machines but I don't have either of those two. I'm sure either of them would be fine for knife making without a Digital Read Out. I don't have any DRO's on any of my manual mills and I think putting one on either of those mills would be un-necessary for knife making. I'm...

    Yew Wood for Scales

Knife handles are small, generally speaking, a lot needs to be going on in a small area to make an interesting handle. Yew wood, IMHO, is pretty boring. The finished knife will reflect exactly what you put into it. On the other hand, the price is right. Have fun, be safe.

    My youngest apprentice

Warner my youngest apprentice, 15 yrs old, started on the canister damascus for his third knife today. He wanted to do gears. The outline of the gears are nickle, and he is using three colors of powder metal. Here's some pictures. Next week, we forge weld the billet.

Yes, we filled some tags. We got a sixty inch moose, a real nice caribou and a big grizzly (for the arctic).
