If you watch some of the old Japanese (and maybe not so old) videos of the masters making laminated steel, they do exactly what John said. When we make bloomery into "good" steel, we do the same. + 1 on what Ed said about buying tools.

Looks like you will have a scale or two in there. There's a lot of waste in making suitable scales from rough wood.

Too funny

I have several milling machines but I don't have either of those two. I'm sure either of them would be fine for knife making without a Digital Read Out. I don't have any DRO's on any of my manual mills and I think putting one on either of those mills would be un-necessary for knife making. I'm...

The most important advice I can give you is - have fun.

Knife handles are small, generally speaking, a lot needs to be going on in a small area to make an interesting handle. Yew wood, IMHO, is pretty boring. The finished knife will reflect exactly what you put into it. On the other hand, the price is right. Have fun, be safe.

Warner my youngest apprentice, 15 yrs old, started on the canister damascus for his third knife today. He wanted to do gears. The outline of the gears are nickle, and he is using three colors of powder metal. Here's some pictures. Next week, we forge weld the billet.

Yes, we filled some tags. We got a sixty inch moose, a real nice caribou and a big grizzly (for the arctic).
