    Sanding Thumb

Kind of laughing here sorry, yeah I also suffer the same fate. Not too the muscle mind you... But it does make a mess of my thumbs. I use A TON of "okeefs working hands" moisturizer. Kind of apply it all day every day. I considered picking up or making some of those thin leather thumb and...

    Well This Is Weird

My even heat has always been around 50 degrees off, give or take, right out of the box. I picked up a K type thermocouple and PID controller all under $100. Callinrated the controller to "0" in a slurry of ice and water. Stuck the thermocouple through the front brick of my oven. Then I either...

    Hand care?

I think both systems are about the same. Pros and cons to each. And both our systems are ranked pretty low on the list of global health care systems. You have better doctors that actually treat people... For a price. Our doctors do diddly squat for us but its free. (Great if all you need is...

    Hand care?

Canada in general doesnt have a great healthcare system in general imo. Many of our hospitals are like giant delapitated empty warehouses. But im refering to my part of the country specificaly. Its beyond sick here... Many of us go to places like mexico for better healthcare. Where I am now...

    Hand care?

In my teens I did a fair amount of sports and used something called lakota for my aches and pains. I believe it containes glucosamine and a number of other related ingredients. I found it worked well, I may start using this again. Im in Canada and not sure if this is only a Canadian product or...

    Hand care?

Ah glucosamine! Thas a good idea. Im on well water. Also no salt here, very reduced sugar and soda (type2 diabetic) Not much of a drinker either. Actually quitting salt made a HUGE difference. But now it seems like im getting worse again. Now im attempting an elimination diet to see what that...

Forging an axe what tools needed?

I took blacksmithing in high school. But that was pretty basic. I understand much of the basics but not a whole lot of hands on experience. In high school we never got into anvil tools other than hammers and basic tongs.

    Hand care?

Im not evn sure what to call this post. I have yet to really start my knife making or blacksmithing. Its been half a lifetime and im very close to taking off BUT... Now I have what I think is arthritis(perhaps not) but in general I work with my hands... and this has me rather worried. For...

Forging an axe what tools needed?

Im about to order some blacksmithing tools. I want to try forging axe heads. Im not entirely sure what tools ill need... After watching a number of axe forging videos this is my best guess. Some sort of drift for the eye Swage for the eye Some sort of hardy cutoff tool Tongs Hammer Im just...

    Grinding a chirra

The tool I was considering is essentially a belt sander. Im still a bit in the air about that one. I was under the impression with a fullering tool you still have to somehow hand sand the tooling marks out? Im mostly wondering how to do that. Wether the marks are forged or ground in... I...

    Grinding a chirra

Ive been working on a kukri design for a while now, for my own use. They often have chirra or fullers largely to make the blade lighter. As an experiment I used this mild steel to make a mock up knife. I LOVE the feel of this blade! I want 1-2 chirra... In this case you can see where I ground...

    Taking out warps.

Thanks! that actually gives me some ideas. Tbh... Iv never tried normalizing, stress relief or annealing because it seems a bit complex... Salt pots and such I believe? I do have a paragon heat treating oven... Is there a process to do these steps for 1095 and 80crv with just the kiln?

    Taking out warps.

Mostly stock removal. The blades dont often warp for me in the HT process. Mostly its from "pre warped" factory steel. Ive tried grinding and it does lose a lot of material. Ive tried bending the steel flat bar back into shape prior to cutting the blank... But tend to make it worse. I figure the...

    Taking out warps.

Ok sort of noob questions here. I have a few blades with warps... Ive NEVER been good at straightening blades. I know theres A LOT of info and ways to do this, but ive been having little luck. The steel stock I have 4" x 4' came from the factory with a warp. 1095 80crv Now it sits there...

    Another burner problem with pics

Thank you Ed and everyone with ALL the help! Its making a lot of sense to me and im going to go ahead with the blown burner. It will be a bit of a pain to re build but I figure its worth it. Idk why I went with my current design in the first place. Apologies if my posts and replies seem a bit...

    Another burner problem with pics

Ed sory for the late reply, just slowly getting things done here. To answer the previous questions... The forge body is an old propane tank The inside length is 13" The interior is approx 366 cubic inches The liner is 2" kaowool and 1/4 to 1/2 inch refractory mortar with a coating of itc100...

Forge up and running, need some thoughts on fine tuning (videos)

    1. Thats a good question... Habit I guess. I set my tank to the max pressure I may need. Then I do the forge pressures at the burner valves. 2. Its a round body, I think it gets a decent vortex. Im hoping to avoid cutting it up and re location the burner down to just one... Youre right though...
