About to embark on my first knife(knives)

I 'm all for it, but it may be more work than you realize. Give it a shot, but have a backup in mind you can get in a hurry. I say simple hunters are a good way to go. Pick a design with no guard to make your life simpler. Make the same thing for everyone. A double ground boot knife, or deep...

    shipping to Canada

If the pivot is a screw, tighten it down completely. use the Mail, USPS , get tracking and signature skip UPS, Fedex and the rest - they have $40 tacked on fees No problem with slip joints, no length limits. Pack it in a box within a box within a box so the "accidental" finger poke...

What's the best way to put a 3/4" hole in a 0.200" thick piece of XHP?

How about a step drill to get you close and finish with a reamer if you need to ? I like them for thin material as they have only 1 cutting edge, they self centre/pilot themselves.

    collector's advice

From this photo, you had nothing to lose by working on it if it was already scrap, but I wouldn't call that a "restoration." I would call restoration putting something into perfect origional working order the day it was made. For a WWII aircraft or tank, sure that's great, make it run like it...

Thinking out of the box WAY OUT

This scrap plastic has compressive strength, but you rely on wire. Is there a good, reliable cheap source of wire there? Have you seen straw bale adobe It is effective because of the trapped airspace, insulative properties, and uses less material because of that. It also uses straw, an...

which motor for this variable speed inverter (VFD)

maganinooo states that his VFD is IP65 This is the metric equivalent of NEMA 4, Sealed against dust and liquid spray. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code No need for homemade enclosures like on the TECO50 Nema 1. For the motor I would look for 2 hp 3 phase 240 volt (220 ) Get an enclosure...

    Dust collection?

Even better than this, there is a home make cyclone separator you can put water in the bottom of. Others have used this setup say the downforce of the air blows the water up so it gets caught and exhausted into the shop vac There are free plans about, if I can remember the name of it...

    What milling Machine

That's a huge question. What do you want it for? Slotting a 1-4" guard in brass is a huge difference between larger cutting tools in steel. How much space do you have? How much do you want to spend? As already mentioned, the machine is only a fraction. You still have to hook it up and put...
