    My first punched eye axe

I made my axe drift. To figure out the size and shape I wanted I bought an inexpensive 28" axe handle and mimicked to shape with the drift. After using it once I am not sure if the drift needs more tuning for uniformity or if I just need more practice making axe eyes. or both. I bought a 2"x4"...

    My first punched eye axe

I want to start another one, I want to make one that is all some type of tool steel, does anyone have any advice as to what metal I should use? I was thinking something in the 1045-1060 range or something similar but I am just guessing here. I have spent a lot of time on NJSB website and they...

    My first punched eye axe

I’ve made several wrapped eye hatchets and tomahawks and made the leap to making a real axe. I cut a 1” slab of mild steel off of a 2”x4” bar. Drilled some guide holes and welded a handle on it. Punched the eye and forged a drift then drifted the eye, split the axe body and forge welded in a...

What's going on in your shop?

From a hunk of mild steel, for once the forge weld went right the first time with no finnicking around! The bit is forged out of a piece of .270x2” 1084, I forged it down to about 1” wide and somewhere about 3/8” thick then forged in the taper. This project took way too much time and propane. I...

What's going on in your shop?

Wee bit of forge welding and some final clean up. Should have this thing done tonight or after work tomorrow. Had a hell of a time fixing the eye, it was out of whack big time, it’s still not perfect but the head sits straight and true on the handle

Got a bit of work done in the shop today I extended the frame on my little hydraulic press then forged some more on this axe head and finally cut out and shaped this little axe handle for the axe I’m making

What's going on in your shop?

Didn’t get much done. Cramped from my hand all the way to my shoulder and couldn’t even pick up a hammer but i can now get the handle about an inch into the future axe head

    Trying something new

I’ve made several wrapped eye axes successfully and had some failures along the way. I’ve been watching YouTube a lot over the last couple years (sorry @EdCaffreyMS I know how you feel about YouTube experts.) I spent some time looking for drifts and such to make a traditional style axe/hatchet...
