    Wisdom from training manuals

Thought a few of you old 'War Dogs' might enjoy and maybe relate to a few of these little bits of wisdom gleaned from here and there: 'If the enemy is in range, so are you.' - Infantry Journal - 'It is generally inadvisable to eject directly over the area you just bombed.' - US. Air...

About to embark on my first knife(knives)

I noticed the tang of the file in one photo was on the right side of the knife. When you draw file with the file perpendicular to the blade, the tang goes to the left. I didn't find that out for a couple of knives and it sure cut down on the big gouges when you get through and want to start...

Wood in the Kitchen - a test

Michael, The reason I just said veg oil is that there are so many brands available and for this purpose I don't think it would really matter which one is used. I happen to use Crisco but that's just what I grew up with. A thin coat worked in with the fingers lasts pretty well. It's kind of...

Steve, I'd like to say thanks to you and all the Mods for working so hard to get this thing going. I wish you all well in what I'm sure will be a trying time getting through this first year. Wood in the Kitchen - a test

Michael, I like the idea of the salad bowl oil. I have few hand made wooden spoons that I just rubbed real well with veg oil and they have held up well for years. When they start getting to look a little dry, I just put a little oil in the bowl and rub it in real well with my fingers. I...

Mosaic Damascus with Musk ox horn

Very nice Randy. You guys are turning out some beautiful work. I'm going to have to find some of that musk ox horn. This is the second knife I've seen it on and it would look great on a couple of my designs. Carey

What steel are power hacksaw blades made from

Do a test quench on a piece. Don't temper it. Put it on a hard surface an break a piece off. If it snaps like glass, it will make a knife if you get the temper right. It may not be the best knife in the box but it's good practice. Carey

    logo engraving

You can check my Links site. I have links to Ernie for stencils and to Chris Crawford for building an etcher that was designed by Bob Warner. That way, you can kind of keep it all in the pound. Carey

    Can you darken stabalized woods?

The stabilizer is some kind of poly based chemical and it will not allow the adsorption of any more moisture. I'm not aware of anything that will darken it except use over time. Carey
