First Neo Tribal & First post

I also saw plants that looked like agave when I was in the Yucatan from which I was told came sisal rope fibers. I'm not much of a botanist, but can anyone tell me the differences between hemp, jute and sisal? What plants produce them (I've got hemp) and the differences pro and con between them?

First Neo Tribal & First post

Funny, speaking about cordage. Once back in the seventies I was driving across Indiana or Illinois one, I don't remember, but I was out in the country. I was passing these huge fields surrounded by high chain link fences topped with concertina wire. Being somewhat acquainted with certain plants...

First Neo Tribal & First post

That's a nice looking knife. I think a lot of you NT guys on this forum would make good sailors, you're so good at lashing and knots. I wear pull on boot because I could mess up tying my shoes. Hat's off to you Buck. Good job. Speaking of lashing, what kind of cord did you use? It looks to be...

    Talkin' Knife Philosophy....

As I said on another forum on this topic, philosophy, like the universe is reputed to do, and science itself ever expands and changes, therefore it can never be static. When it came to "sacred cows," the NTM's were good at slaughtering and barbecuing them. That doesn't mean old ideas...

    The Neo-Tribal Metalsmith Art Movement

This a great thread and should be read by any interested in anything NT. Two of the original founders lead the discussion. Worth the time investment.

    Neo-Tribal Revisited....

Tai Goo, one of the original founders, recently reminded me of one of the NTM's credos, "We're not out to make a better knife. We're out to make a knife better." Tai Goo, from back in the day.

    Neo-Tribal Revisited....

Accepted, but never acceptable. We make the status quo nervous. Imagine showing up for your ABS Journeyman test naked. No ABS person would ever think of such in their wildest dreams. An old NTMS might possibly. No one could handle us. That made us dangerous.

    Talkin' Knife Philosophy....

Well, after all this the Knife Dogs forum. What could be more appropriate? Knives and dogs, goes together like soup and sandwich, hard liquor and handguns...uh, more like soup and sandwiches. ;)

    Talkin' Knife Philosophy....

My only problem with Jack escaping and running, was he'd eventually come home with a dead chicken in his mouth. Back east, here in the rural south, most farmers have shotguns, and can't take a joke when it comes their chickens being eaten by dogs that could pass for wolves. By the way, I didn't...

    apply scales w/ C/A glue ?

There used to be an epoxy that was sold by K&G finishing. It was a two part epoxy that was white. They claimed it was the industry standard adhesive for gluing the club to the shaft on high end golf clubs. I tried it,and had no problems other than on some dark handled knives it looked like I has...

    Talkin' Knife Philosophy....

Yeah, I get you Billy, and if there is any doubt that a pattern welded blade forged to completion (except for polishing and sharpening, which may be the same thing) doesn't make a quite serviceable blade, one should check out the Samurai swords of the Koto, Shinto, and the first part of the...

    apply scales w/ C/A glue ?

For handle scales I like the JB Weld products. The 24 hour cure version when clamped has, so far never failed me. Excess glue in unwanted areas cleans up with acetone before it sets. If a scale slips when clamping, you have plenty of time to reset and reclamp it. The JB Kwik sets like its name...

Hey thanks! The Chuck Ward looks pretty solid. Are there foam pads holding the blade?

    Knifemaker's Vise....

Am finding that the older I get, the more I should have been born with at least three hands, or perhaps born twins. So, I'm looking at knifemaker's vises. Anybody have any experience with a Garrett-Wade Ultimate Versatile Vise? It's about a hundred bucks, and the video on their website is...

    Talkin' Knife Philosophy....

A while back I got a Medford Knife and Tool model TFF2 folder, which is now (I think) discontinued. There was a time when I used to fly to Mexico in a four seater Cessna that a pilot buddy of mine had. The TFF2 was designed to be a folding machete. It has a long G10 and titanium handle with...

    Talkin' Knife Philosophy....

What elements do you think go into making a good knife? Now wait and think a moment before you answer. Obvious things, like appropriate steel selection, adequate craftsmanship, proper heat treatment--hard edge, springy back, aesthetics, balance, etc. are all givens, and do not count for this...
