I like to use red liner material a lot and red and black mixed for spacers.......I have found that the g10 red and black spacer material .....especially the red is not as nice as the fibre liner material.....the color isn't as bright......is there something that i am doing wrong or is that...

I am looking for some high quality curly maple,koa,birch,etc for axe and hatchet handles.......I like the tighter banding like you see on the good black powder rifles .....I am not looking for a bargain .......I want the good stuff.......has to be larger pieces to do axe handles...

try searching L6 sawmill steel.......if there are any sawmill supply places near you they will have info on L6...........i use a lot of it that i get from a friend that owns a large saw shop here in thunder bay.......we have a lot of sawmills in our area.......i have been making my damascus...

I went to the blade show in the early 80,s when it was in knoxville tennessee.......you would only see damascus knives on the odd table like bill moran etc.......what a long way we have come.......at the same time there were people getting thousands of dollars for beautiful carved...

have you used the film backed 3m belts........i know that i am not crazy about the trizact belts from 3m but the film back micron belts have really good results for me.......i use a 20 inch wheel a lot for hollow grinds and a rotary rubber backed platen on the flat grinds......i go down to 5...

I don.t think i ever seen a bob loveless or jim merrit video or any of the old school makers hand sanding a blade......mind you when i think about it most of their knives were hollow ground....i think that tkroenlein is right on that the scotchbrite belts will wash out your crisp grind...

I sanded and polished a scrap piece of curly maple today......holy cow did it ever buff up great........nice deep polish........would not take the stain very well after....just an experiment anyway....i may try a small kitchen knife with just polishing on the curly maple.....a different look

thanks for the input guys.......i have used all of the above.......was experimenting with the danish oil......i have just recieved some potassium permanganate crystals from amazon to try.......has anyone used it?........i posted the thread because it was the first time that i ever buffed curly...

I just finished a couple of small hunting hatchets with curly maple handles......I used 5 or 6 coats of dark walnut danish oil on the curly maple.....I wasn,t happy with the finish as it was not as glossy as i have had before......I thought what the heck and went to the buffer with white...

I think he is talking about a power hammer made with an automobile tire..........most people build their own........they work quite well

I have been making knives for a very long time and have decided long time ago to harden and quench before grinding.......especially with thin blades such as filleting knives......i do all profiling and drilling and filing before hardening and grind post heat treat with ceramic belts.......costs...

I am pretty sure if you google Knife Sports International you will get the specs........it is like 15 in overall...10 in blade....2 in max width.....must have thong hole........forward hole i think.....lots i have seen are 3/8 thick at the spine with full flat grind.......they like to use horse...

I . like to order the aqua-fortis stains but for some reason they don,t ship to canada.......i would guess it would be MSDS regulations......if there are any canadian members watching this please share if you know where to get in canada........also if there is some one who uses potassium...

has anybody used potassium permanganate to dye curly maple........i have some on order from amazon and could use any tips on using it.....i am not satisfied with the stains i have been using as i would like the grain to pop out better
