Will this work as an Etcher?

[SIZE="3"]That unit looks like it should work. I don't know about the voltage, or amperage etc required, but the fact that it is an ac/dc converter with a rheostat looks good. I get my stencils from Marking Methods. You can reach them at Marking Methods, Inc. - Los Angeles 301 South...

    O K, I am a dumb a@#

There is the rub. Finding W1 or W2 flat stock is all but impossible. All I have found available is round stock that has to be forged down. If you have the ability to forge or a local friend who does I would sell you a foot of W2 5/8" round stock.

    O K, I am a dumb a@#

Actually Aldo's 1084 takes a pretty nice hamon in Parks 50 oil. You can get a nice curvy line but not the real active line of a water quench. I broke 8 blades before accepting that I was not going to water quench the 1084. 1080 will water quench nicely but w1 or w2 is better. Here is an oil...

Dozier Bushcrafter in a new steel for you bone heads

Our own Les George has made a nice knife from XHP and is doing a pass around for people to test out. Go here http://www.knifedogs.com/showthread.php?t=1866 for more info on it. Besides... you gotta figure if Dozier moves from his beloved D2 the XHP has got to be some killer knife steel.

    D2

Seved, D2 is an air hardening steel. Normalizing would be a bad idea I think. It should be hardened at1875 degrees F and quenched in air (or oil) then tempered twice at 450 degrees F for two hours each. Let cool between tempers in still air. This should get you a Rc hardness of about58 and...
