What's going on in your shop?

Worked on antiquing the fittings and guard. It took a nice patina. I’ll probably leave the steel spacer alone.

Thanks! It gave me some anxiety for a bit, but it’s sorted out now

What's going on in your shop?

Working on my 3rd hidden tang. Next step is to decide how to patina the bronze.

What's going on in your shop?

Didn’t know cedar could be stabilized. I like the look.

What's going on in your shop?

The CAD work to create the file was $30, one time, and the blanks were $10.30 each plus shipping. Price includes the 80crv2 steel too. Well worth it, especially with this model. Going to save me hours per blank in time.

What's going on in your shop?

Got some blanks cut by water jet from NJ Steel Baron. Very pleased. This is going to be a huge time saver on this model.

    Problem with Electro Etching?

I'd also recommend neutralizing it when done. You can get Neutralizer and Electrolyte from USA Knifemaker. They're not expensive and last a very long time.

What's going on in your shop?

Yup. Have mine hooked up to a Dust Deputy and shop vac for wood n such. Just use the water bucket for steel. Sometimes I’ll use a box fan with a furnace filter attached too.

What's going on in your shop?

Nice one John! Looks like that one will have lots of interesting activity. What steel do you find gives you the best results for your process? I'm playing with W-2 right now, but see others get good results with 1075, 1095 and W-1.

What's going on in your shop?

Here’s after sanding to 1200 followed by a series of etching and polishing. It’s hard to get a decent photo. I’m pretty happy with the activity on this one.

What's going on in your shop?

Time for a test etch. I sanded to 220 and cleaned with soap followed by alcohol… And here’s after 10 minutes in the ferric chloride. Now I’ll see what I can get with some more sanding and polishing.

Working on another Bowie project. Thought I’d try for a hamon on this one. Hope to have some cool pics to share after heat treat. Got it clayed up with some Satanite.

What's going on in your shop?

How thick are the final pieces? I've been wondering if they could be used for guards and spacers. Looks like a lot of fun to do.

What's going on in your shop?

Finished up with a ferric chloride etch, some stingray leather, and a para cord wrap. I’ll have to figure out a kydex sheath for it next.

Right. That’s kinda what I was thinking too.

What's going on in your shop?

Trying something completely new. New profile, new grind. I don’t know if there’s a name for that profile, but I’ve seen it on folders before and it’s really intrigued me. Been told it’s a flat grind vs compound, so that’s how I’m approaching it. Hopefully I won’t screw it up!

Has anyone used Belian Iron wood?

I bet it will polish up nicely. I've used Cumaru (sometimes called Brazilian Teak) on handles before. Pieces came from flooring, so very dense and durable. It was also plain to look at, but finished out beautifully. Give it a try.
