    Good Ol' 1084

I have recently been playing around with some of Aldo's 1084. Can somebody tell me what the best way to heat treat this steel is? I have been heating to non-magnetic (a shade over) and quenching in canola oil heated to around 130 degrees. I tempered at 400 for an hour. Did not do a second...

    My Simple Heat Treat Sheet

Thanks Jason! Very well put together and helpful. I have been trying my hand at 1084 from Aldo lately. Have never done the second temper cycle at 450. May have to give that a try. Good to see another Texan on here frequently! I live in Canyon BTW.

    Newly completed utility/hunter

This is a picture of a knife I recently completed for my nephew. He gave us a visit this summer and we had some time to get out in the shop and play a bit. He designed the knife and we got it profiled, rough ground and heat treated while he was here. I finished the rest of the knife and made the...

    Mark and Steve and I---1957---

Great story! It is a shame that kids these days get in trouble for simply chewing their toast into the shape of a gun at school. I carried a pocketknife with me every day to school too. Man's most primitive and useful tool is now only seen as a weapon in many cases. It is a sad situation we...

    Full tang hardware

I'm looking for a supplier with the threaded tubes to be inserted into a full tang knife and have torx head screws that will attach the scales. Preferably black in color. I've checked USAKnifemakers but can't find them. Also, what size do y'all use? Thanks!

Check out the latest WIP by Bruce bump. He explains at the end how he does it and the tools he uses to make it perfectly spaced.

Double guard and framed handle, rear bolsters too

Bruce, you are simply the master of the craft and the WIP's! Thanks for taking the time to post all of this. I have to give your tools a plug here too. I am the proud owner of your carbide file guide as well as your new carbide handle broach. I have to say that those two tools have made my...

    Kydex Curling!

Thanks Calvin. Ill give that another try tonight. Do you think Kydex and Boltoron from USAKnifemakers reacts the same and requires the same temps?

    Kydex Curling!

Help! I am new to kydex and have been trying to use .080 kydex to make a sheath. I have tried using an oven, a heat gun and even a skillet with the aid of a non-contact thermometer and have had big trouble with the kydex curling up on itself like a newspaper. I have tried heating it slowly and...

    Edge thickness

Great replies guys! Lots to consider here! I'm at about .015 at the edge right now. It is a flat ground blade. It will actually be my first to sharpen with the wicked edge. I have always used my KMG to sharpen free handed in the past. It's made out of Aldo's 1084 and the first compleated 1084...

    Edge thickness

I recently finished a 5" blade made of 1084. It is a simple drop point hunter with G10 handle scales. I'm ready to sharpen it and put my logo on it. My question is this; how thick do you guys typically leave the edge just prior to sharpening a knife of this size? Thanks for the help!

    what size press?

Might check this link out. I know the guy that posted this and he has had great luck with the setup. Pretty inexpensive to do especially if you already have a large enough air compressor. Here is the link: http://www.knivesplus.com/minihydraulicpress.html

    Stonewahing question

Thanks for the info Andrew. I hadn't thought of the rust issue under the scales. I think I'll skip it on this knife and try it on my 2nd before installing the scales. Ill throw a piece of G-10 in the tumbler and do a little experimenting anyway. Thanks again!

    Stonewahing question

Two quick questions: can you submerge an entire completed knife with G-10 Handles attached into Ferric chloride? How would tumbling with ceramic pyramids affect the G-10 handle scales? Thanks for any input!

    Ernie Grospitch

Talked to him on the phone today and ordered a new stencil. Didn't know anything about his injury until just now. He seemed fine on the phone and said my order would ship tomorrow so I guess he is back at it.

    The grizzly!!!

I have seen guys simply use the motor as a bearing and hook up a variable speed motor to the buffer side of the motor. They simply leave the motor off and use the variable speed. Check out Chris Crawfords page. He has some shop pics I think that's how this setup.
