Dont drop your freshly queched 1095 blade!!

That is very well written Kevin. I will have to give that a shot and see what happens. My 10 year old son is always shooting things around the shop with my non contact thermometer anyway. Now I can put him to work during an interrupted quench. Thanks for your insight on the subject!

    Help! I screwed up!

Hey guys! I was apparently a little sleep deprived in the shop last night and accidentally ground too far into the tang if a full tang knife and ground into one of the holes I had drilled to lighten the tang. Any ideas on how to fill the hole? It has black G10 scales and so I had thought of...

Anybody ever used electric sanders for flats?

Man I am so glad that y'all brought this up. I actually modified one of my hand sanders with the micarta base to do flats a while back and forgot about using it. I'm trying to finish several knives for Christmas gifts and that will save me some much needed time. I think it was an Ed Caffrey...

Dont drop your freshly queched 1095 blade!!

That is very interesting. How can you tell when the blades hit 400 degrees if not using salts and does every steel benefit from marquenching?

Any reason this wouldn't make a decent forge body?

I recently completed a freon tank forge and I couldn't be happier with it. The shell would be a little thicker than a popcorn can I'm sure. You can learn how to make one here: http://ronreil.abana.org/minifor1.shtml

    DIY Stonewashing tumbler

Great setup there! I have been wanting to make something similar but can't decide what kind of motor to use. I don't have anything like what you used. Any ideas out there on what could be substituted?

    A little help here please!

Hey guys! I am making my mom a kitchen knife for Christmas and I am using some pecan from my Grandparents old farm for the handle scales. I have considered sending the wood off to be stabilized, buying some cactus juice and trying to do it myself, using tru- oil, or maybe a superglue finish...

New to knifemaking in Huntsville, Texas

Welcome to the forum! It is a great place to learn and always a lot of friendly people that are willing to answer questions. I am a fellow Texan up in Amarillo. I too started off with Wayne Goddards book and started with his one brick forge for heat treating. It worked very well for many years...

    Help

I second the motion on Don's books and DVD's. I have them both and they are a wealth of info. His liner lock DVD really lays out the process nicely and is something you can watch over and over and learn something new each time. This forum is another great source. Feel free to ask any questions...

Can you clamp to tight for soldering?

Get the KMG. You will never regret it. It is one solid piece of equipment that will last forever. If you have to leave out any accessories due to cost I would just get the flat platen and the small wheel attachment with a 1/2 or 3/4" wheel. My 10" wheel gets used the least now that I flat grind...

Can you clamp to tight for soldering?

Chris Crawford has an awesome tutorial on soldering bolsters on his slip joint DVD. He simply uses the small all metal spring clamps that you can pick up at your local hardware store for a couple of bucks. Just take the rubber end protectors off and clamp the liner and bolster together with just...
