W2, 1095, 1075 are very good. Steels that are low in Manganese make the best Hamons. Any steel with less than 0.400% Manganese should be good for a nice Hamon if heat treated and polished properly.

Using wrenches and sockets to make pattern welded/Damascus steel would be a waste of time and money. You'd be much better off buying some 1084 & 15N20 from Aldo. I don't want to sound rude but it sounds like you are a long way from having the ability to make pattern welded steel if you're asking...

Chrome Vanadium steel is basically just a simple 10XX steel with a dash of Vanadium added. There is probably more pattern welded/Damascus steel made with 1084 & 1095 than everything else combined. So yes, it can be made and makes a very good blade if done right.
