    Flash tempering

Let me just say I hope I havent stirred a nest of bees. :) What Bubba says would lead one to think that temper is a matter of heat only, being that the blade is heated to a specific temp and then quenched presumebly to keep the heat from climbing. No doubt this works or it wouldnt be...

    Flash tempering

Bubba, If im following correctly, the reason for that style of temper is to make sure the blade is tempered "just enough" so as to not be brittle and not lose the hamon with excess heat buildup? My question I guess is do both methods acheive the same result. In other words does the micro...

    Flash tempering

What I mean by "flash temper" is tempering relatively quickly with heat. I have seen it done by holding a knife in front of a propane forge (a la Wayne Goddard) or by laying the knife on a metal plate and heating the under side of the plate so that the heat is transfered to the knife. Using a...

    Bladowski Slipjoint

Looks great. Just wondering, with no kick what stops the edge from contacting the spring when it is closed?

    Frontier Patch Knife

I like it. Though I have to admit I didnt to expect a knife called frontier patch knife to be made from 440.

    Flash tempering

What are the drawbacks? (sorry bad pun...but I couldnt resist :o) I have always tempered in an oven, but I know some guys who flash temper, or temper with heat and watch the color until it goes to straw. Is tempering a matter of just heat or is it heat and time? Sean

    Slipjoint from me

Very nice. I really like the way the kick flows into the tang. I dont think I have seen one rounded quite like that, it makes for a nice transition. Sean

    Grinding Help Please....

I bet the side with the nice little swoop is with you dominant hand and the other is your off hand. Try to make sure you are not twisting spine into the belt too much. Also try running the belt off the edge of the platen about 1/16" Oh and practice, practice, practice! Sean

    edge thickness issues

I would say the two most likely culprits are 1. Not keeping the blade moving. When grinding it is important to keep the blade moving, I start the blade with the belt in the middle between plunge and tip, with very light pressure. Then all in one motion slide back to the plunge and grind out...

Sharpening---Which of these two practices is correct and why.

I would agree. However... Very well said. I have to agree with Ed, that most custom makers are never going to have the exact same angle everytime, provided they are grinding free hand. What I have found though is that over time, with much practice and trial and error, you become trained...

A few pictures and brief tutorial of wiring a VFD to make a disc grinder

Boss Just for my own clarification, you are using 110v input and 3 phase output? Also, further down you wired in for 220v, is that because this particular unit wouldnt work with 110v? I am looking to switch to VFD right now, I can run a 220 circuit to my building but it would be easier to...
