    Vert forge WIP

I was hesitant to post this because of all the vertical forge builds out there but after talking to one of the mods I decided I would share how this one is being made. The goals are simple in that Safety and Thrifty are my tenants. This is my first vertical build as well but not my first or even...

Working with Dymondwood and similar laminates

I was a bowyer for several years till an allergic reaction from some African teak but when I was building them I used dymonnd wood and stratbond for building risers. The reason the the hole gets smaller is the wood swells from the heat. Dymonnd wood and strata bond are all trade names for an...

    A father son Pair.

Not to steal your thunder but I know how it feels to make a Father and son pair. My dad was in the shop the other day waving a bowie around that was for a customer. I asked him to put it down which in itself is weird as he is my dad but I asked him to put it down before he scratched it and I...

Thinking of building a competition cutter any suggestions?

Since you have posted the original topic I have been looking at some past post trying to get and idea of them and saw one like you just mentioned. I think it was Rick Marchland that mentioned something in a pm once as to why it was shaped like a parang.

Thinking of building a competition cutter any suggestions?

Fred is the geometry of a competition blade too thin to be of use for normal chopping or use around the camp?

    Vertical Forge build

Doug I was told that the work piece would need a handle or you run the risk of dropping it in the forge. Now a shelf can be added to the front and back or as in my case a handle stand that will adjust for the length and weight of the piece. Sounds like a lot but its just an adjustable stand.

Thinking of building a competition cutter any suggestions?

Anthony would you mind showing the build or the blade when finished? Sounds pretty interesting to me!

is the brass rod test reliable???

Farmer is this a chopping blade? I would reckon at 30* you would have a had time flexing the edge. I interested on what Kevin and others would recommend as a better alternative but I figure a knife is for cutting so in my simple thinking a cutting test would be good is why I chose the romex.

    Vertical Forge build

Thanks Sam. This is my first vertical as well. I have built several horizontals and have been doing for welding so time to build the vert. I have the body cut out and welded up. The body is 10" dia 3/8's thick walled 3/8's bottom and 18" tall. It was free so nuff said lol. Will add the Kaowool...

is the brass rod test reliable???

So what is a better alternative to testing if the draw is where we want it? I cut a strand of romex 1/16 copper.

    I can't Figure It Out.

Nothing wrong with making bowies and in fact I think its everything right! Fullsize bowies 9.5 to 10" blades are fast becoming my favorite knives to build. While I dont sell as many of them as smaller EDC's I am not into forging knives to make a living as I have two other jobs so I say make what...

    Vertical Forge build

Looking Good Sam. I and building a vertical now as well and look forward to seeing what all you do to the two you are building. Sam I see you place the burner holder on a tangent. Is this how you have build all your vertical forges? Have you ever placed the holder straight in like Don Foggs...

    Anvil refacing question

I will go by the machine shop and take a pic before its ground. Still great rebound after welding when flattening the welds so I am hoping it will still be there when its finished being ground. One thing to note if you use the McKay 58 hardalloy rods is they can't be machined. So no milling...
