    Anvil refacing question

Guys, thanks for the advice but since the responses came too late I have already resurfaced it. Ed I called the machine shop about having it surface ground but doing so I would lose too much of the face. I search the ABANA website and found that the stoody 2010 rod or something like that was...

How long does it take you to make a knife?

I am not a professional maker but have been at this a few years. If I doing a custom piece meaning something that I dont normally make it will add a couple days to it which can really draw things out as I am a firefighter and I work for Mrs Kay from Duck Dynasty 2 days a week in addition so I can...

    Hamons with NO CLAY?

I sent Kevin a pm concerning 1095 pretty much asking for a definitive how to as well as why to do it. I have read several post concerning 1095 normalizing and interrupted quenching written buy Kevin that span from 2005 to prestent and there are changes in each which I have no doubt that time and...

    Hamons with NO CLAY?

Hey this is an open forum! Don't leave me hanging with a secret PM! This is really good reading and I for one welcome whatever crumbs fall from the table. I think many of us want to grow in knowledge and craft a better product but dont yet know what we dont yet dont know.

    Aldos 1075

Thanks but the blade was forged just to see how my skill has progressed at the forge and to be used as a template for a customers knife that I will be starting on next month. I wanted to heat treat the blade to try it out is all. 1075 was all I had in stock that was thick enough to forge.

    Aldos 1075

Its all good Kevin , thanks. I knocked the little bit of scale that was on it off with an old belt and checked it for hammer marks. Then followed the advice on the speroidizing that Josh provided and cleaned it up to 220 grit afterwards. I will do 2 more thermal cycles next week when I have a...

    Shop photos

Welcome Sam and love the shop pics! Glad to see we organize the same! I have two shops or one and half currently. The main shop is for stock removal and has all the power tools and the other is a small space where I forge and later this year the salt pots are going. I live out in the country and...

    Aldos 1075

Thanks Josh. I have read Kevins post on the link you provided but had forgotten it as I have read so much of his stuff, thank you. Bring a hypoeructoid steel I am guessing it needs a slightly higher austenizing temp, say 1550?

    Aldos 1075

I purchased some of Aldos 1075 and have read it is different than the 1075 sold by admiral in that it has lower manganese. How do I normalize and heat treat it in an oven or rather what temps do I use? I forged the 10" bowie already, its coated with pbc in the pic, but need to soften it a...

Basic how to use an oven questions

I cant afford a hardness tester just yet but I did purchase RC files and find them very helpful as well as the brass rod. I use PBC powder to coat the carbon steel and love it. It cleans up easy under hot water but most of it pops off in the quench. Tracy has it and one pound will do many...

breaking the hard edges/angles off a knife

I use shop roll and shoe shine the paper back and forth keep my hands at the same distance apart from the blade. just go through the grits. I make a knife very similar to yours in the pic and round the spine as well. You can barely see it as I blended the spine into the back cut of the modified...

    Hamons with NO CLAY?

I believe this is also true but not mentioned much when austenizing at the higher and lower temps. If one were to austenize at the low end and the soak stayed the same as what one does on the high end there will be less carbon in solution and therefore when queched the blade will not be able to...
