First time I really used it for a purpose, It got to 1500 in 15 mins or so, I could turn the gas and air down and keep it between 1480 and 1500 by adjusting it. It probably would have evened out if I kept it up.

I am using a Johnson #120 forge. Converted to propane. It has a gas control valve and adjustable blower motor but no temp control. I ordered a pyrometer with a ceramic probe to be able to see what the temp is and I have a magnet to check before quenching. I really appreciate all the advice.

I confess I don't know what steel it is, bought a piece off Amazon - BLD-54 from Poshland Industries, ladder pattern. It is fairly hard to cut and it all looks tight along the grinds so far.

I am pleased with my profile, going with brass bolsters and wood handle with brass pins. Is it better to Grind the blade before hardening? Thanks Vern

    Hello from VA

Been making knives on and off since I was in the service almost 40 years ago, decided I want to lean more about the art and get more serious about it. This site appears yo be more to my style. I am working on a Damascus camp knife and will have some question on tempering. Thanks Vern
