    vfd and motor ?

my experience has been 25% of rated speed and motor does not seem to mind. it will depend on the actual motor/vfd combination.

    vfd and motor ?

buy a motor/vfd combo and get going. save pennies and get: a 3" drive wheel an 800 rpm motor a 6" drive wheel the direct drive grinders i have or have used changing drive wheel will take about 5 minutes. changing the motor will take about 10 minutes. so to 'hog' you use 6" wheel with 3600 rpm...

    vfd and motor ?

everyone seems to concentrate on highest available belt speed. while this is important, especially when using belts of 100 grit and coarser, when using finer belts and finishing, I think speed needs to be low. how long does a 220 belt last at 4000 sfpm? how long will that belt last at 500 sfpm?

    vfd and motor ?

    to find belt speed: 3.14 x diameter, then divide by 12. take result and multiply by rpm. you end up with feet per minute. 3.14 x 4"=12.56 12.56/12 = 1.05 1.05 x 1800 = 1884 fpm this would be your belt speed at 100% or 60 Hz. 3.14 x 6 = 18.84 18.84/12 = 1.57 1.57 x 1800 = 2826 fpm

To taper or not to taper, that is my question.

i would look at total weight and see if you are 2 ounces or less. with something that light, balance is not an issue

    vfd and motor ?

one vfd will power one motor at a time. i have mine wired so if i want to change from belt grinder to disc grinder, turn off vfd, then swap plugs.

Need something for the knife shop.

I would either buy a furnace or spend 1/2 on little stuff and make the other 1/2 my operating budget for the rest of the year. by little stuff i mean good quality drill bits and saw blades, improved shop lighting and ventilation, shop vac that sort of stuff. you need a high temperature furnace...

    Some new designs wanting opinions

flex is geometry not hardness. geometry controls flex and geometry cuts. what i described would be high performance cutter/slicer. i would not see any issues unless you try to baton it. personally, i use diagonal cutting pliers or a box cutter for zip ties.

    Some new designs wanting opinions

bottom drawing, do it in 3/32" or 1/16", get rid of bolster, flat grind, Rc 62-63 minimum, either O1 or 52100, finish bevel at 10* a side.

How to Test your Heat Treat

I think so. being an old sailor, I like to add KIS(keep it simple). The more steps you add to HT, the more chances to make a mistake. The more you deviate from "Industrial standard HT", the more chances to make a mistake. As Kevin said above, to avoid a bent or broken blade, don't use it for...

    vfd and motor ?

I am currently using a Leeson speedmaster for my grinder. It has dedicated push buttons for on/off, start/stop, speed increase and speed decrease. I have the stuff to do remote switches, but when standing the VFD is within easy reach so i just use the factory buttons.

Teco, leeson, fuji, siemens, AB, .... are industrial grade VFDs, designed to run 24/7 for years before replacement. They are programmable with a keyboard. You can shop and find them for less than KB. My grinder VFD is located above, to the left and behind the grinder, so it sees very little...
