Lets talk the Business of Knifemaking.

if your costs exceed market value there is a loss not profit. that was the whole point of former thread. first identify all costs, then reduce costs while maintaining quality so your total costs are always below market value.

Lets talk the Business of Knifemaking.

i don't care how much folks pay you. i don't care how much time you spend. my point was if you have 35 hours invested in a knife, you should be including a minimum of $700(35hrs x $20/hr) for labor. if $20/hr isn't fair, make it $30 or $40, but know how many hours were involved and add that...

Lets talk the Business of Knifemaking.

not sure what you meant. don't matta. you need to keep track of all costs to start. second, get the most out of you materials. if you have access to a good metal bandsaw or a plasma cutter, buy bigger pieces of steel and cut blanks for minimum waste. pin material is cheaper by the foot...

here is the link https://knifedogs.com/threads/knifemaking-abrasive-costs.33167/ i think we included everything one could think of including depreciation on major tools. when doing stuff like heat treat or machine setup, take notes and pictures, so that once you find Your best way, you can repeat.

Lets talk the Business of Knifemaking.

rather than wish to go from $100 to $500 knives, look at this from a real business side. first, detail all costs. i will look in the site archives and find a thread we did 4 or 5 years ago that covered that. what we found was the largest costs were time, sanding belts, and handle material...

TDS actually exists, reference pg 812 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 69th Edition. I served in military for 21 years so both of you can say what you wish(classy or not) and not worry about the not so funny men in leather trench coats and bad hats taking you to prisons...

    Black fox one grinder reviews?

wish I could see one in person. some thoughts looking at photos and the website it is awfully tall and the motor is not supported by anything but its face. a C face motor will be in the 20-40 pound weight range. there is no way to support the motor. some pix show base mounting holes, some...

    Comparing Grinders. the 2x72 type

i would see if there are grinder makers or knife makers near by that would let you see in person and maybe use a grinder before you pay money for it. i was able to use several Wilmont and other brand name grinders before i decided on which one to buy.

    Crazy wood prices?

i understand the differences. don't understand why buyers would pay double for a fancy handle, but that is what has happened to the market. For makers, you have two choices buy ready made scales from a scales maker or make your own. either way, you will pay for the time and labor involved...

    Crazy wood prices?

this thread seems to repeat itself each year about a month after Blade, i made similar comments last year and the year before. crazy beautiful wood grows in my backyard and has names you can pronounce like oak and maple. it seems 'more sexy' means buying blanks made from overseas wood, doesn't...
