UPDATED: You ever see something wrong

i seem to design on the fly. i see a picture of a knife that looks interesting, note dimensions, then start cutting. sometimes i will download a knife picture, then print it actual size on graph paper. this is still just a guide. i try to make all my handles 25% larger than finished target...

    Crazy wood prices?

so spalted or ambrosia maple is plain? what makes koa, a very nice straight grained medium brown wood, so special except that it comes from Hawaii? commercial harvesting is prohibited and only trees that have been storm damaged or are in the way of a new house or road are harvested. if one...

    Crazy wood prices?

i am not saying 2x4. i am talking bookmatched spalted or ambrosia maple, oak burl, dogwood root, honey locust, black walnut, 100 year old oak. this wood is all grown within 75 miles of my shop. the cost for these, just the time to cut out the handle from the table top. again, if a maker...

    Crazy wood prices?

did the knife sell for $150? as with any collectible/hand made item, you can say $150 all day, but what did it sell for or it still advertised for $150? a serious knife user is not going to pay double the price just because of handle material. for a daily user kitchen knife, handle material...

    Crazy wood prices?

I know and understand that. I make tables, benches, cutting boards and such. after wood is planed, i look for "special" spots that may make a nice handle. the spot is cut out to be used later, saving me $10 or $15. nothing ends up on floor except some sawdust. most of the trim and sawdust...

Have You Made One Of These?

did you look at any of the websites I posted? $35 for a 5/32" x 3" x 19" piece of O1 is not a bad price. that would be enough steel for 2 nice cleavers. i am sure if you search you can find better buys. cheers

    Crazy wood prices?

if someone wants to pay you $50 for 2 pieces of 3/8" x 2" x 6" wood, so be it. but defending your prices by saying you take run of the mill wood by the board foot and with skilled hands turn it into "select handle material". but in first sentence you say "The wood that you buy from a flooring...

    Buffer

that is why i set up with top turning away and buff on top of wheel. is what one gets used to. as said, find an adapter and set up on variable speed motor, learn how to use SLOW then increase speed if you need to. buffer will also generate a lot of heat if one is not careful.

    Chef knives project.

i have a 2" angle iron blade holder with holes. holes in tang are same size as holes in holder. make sure blade is secured with 2 or more bolts and parallel with top of angle iron. using an angle finder($10 at lowes) set for 3 degree grind. depending on grinder, either adjust work surface or...

    Chef knives project.

will have to bring camera to shop and record i guess. my ideas are to do the most work(removing and shaping the steel) with the minimum effort. HT is the same idea. got in big argument on another forum, when other members were embracing a very long drawn out HT of a steel which ended up...

    Chef knives project.

more thoughts on using thin steel, say 1/16" or less. you aren't grinding off that much steel. i usually break the edge and start the bevel draw filing with a 12" Bahco or a 14" Nicholson B*stard file. i grind bevel with 60 grit, then 100 or 120 grit, then 220 grit before heat treat. there...

    knife hardness

one way would be make 3 or 4 knives same shape and grind, same steel. temper one at 325F, the second at 375F, the third at 425F. attach a basic handle then use them. you may be able to see differences in performance, might not. it has been said that blade shape, type of grind, and thinness...
