I would suggest mild steel as they said for your first try. Stainless is a pain.

I got some sanding disks I bought a while ago. Some have X100 on them. I found out that this is about 220 grit equivalent. The problem is on the other 2 kind of disks the only writing is “GG 18” for one and “GD 13” for the other. I can't seem to find any equivalent for that. Anybody knows?

Not too shabby for any knife and for a first knife excellent. If you've never done any steel or woodwork before this I agree that you have a bright future indeed. If I were to critique I would say that the guard area needs a little work design wise. The guard is a little big and the ricasso...

Yes it does Bruce. You don't know how much time knowing this will save me. Getting a tight fit all the way through on thicker guards took me forever and many times I don't do such a good job and end up with a loose fit anyway. If I lived closer I'd take you for a nice steak dinner and leftovers...

Bruce, another question: I was surprised by the fit at the back of the guard. Some big gaps there. Is it only for the locating tabs or am I just trying too hard to get a perfect fit all the way through when I do it? Thanks again for taking the time to show us your work and answering our newbie...
