    Horn and bone can be straightened and flattened, but as far as I know, this can not be done with ivory.

    Generally, as a material it's not difficult to work. The challenge is finding a flat piece to cut out. The tusk turns and twists at the same, so you need to get a reasonably big one to cut scales from.

    Here is my take on this matter....must just say, that I am no expert. I would harden at 1020 deg C to 1040 deg C. Then temper the blade at 200 - 250 deg C. To get the spring down to 45 - 48 HRc, temper at 620 deg C, although I would aim for a slightly harder spring of about 50 - 55 HRc, at 550...

    Your guess is 100% correct. On a "normal" knife the clay would be packed across the spine and this creates a junction between the 2 sides of the knife, keeping the clay in position. With a dagger type blade, you don't have this junction.
