    Home made Anvil?

I was thinking to just buy an anvil, but I dont want a crap one.. I do however like messing about and spending more money than a cheap anvil would cost, to make some ungodly anvil construction footing hybrid to see if it works. (and then have to buy a decent anvil after)

So I can get a cheapo anvil. Then weld hardened steel plate on top. Nice..

2nd hand forged knife in the books

Oh it was meant to be grinder free work? Doh, well in that case if it's entirely hand forged then, yeah that's bloody brill.

True. I'm just super excited to finally have the chance to let go with my creative inventive side. And I want all the toys and make them, and come up with ideas on how to improve things, create solutions to new problems etc etc. I almost look forward to that more than the artistic creative side...

Nice! Shaby but chic. I could run that off a bench grinder. (I need to buy one anyway for polishing) I'm still buying kit and prepping as I can't fully dive in until I can move house and get a garage. (3 months) But for now I have a local forge I help out at. I would share more info on my bench...

2nd hand forged knife in the books

A lot of this is subjective... if you wanted to design an arabian style concave knife you got darn close. The main thing is that final 10% on the darn sanding (we all hate it) This guy is an amazing teacher. It seems he learned off Salem straub :

Thank you for the info! And I found this vid, by a German (why are they so good at engineering?) So... to do it properly maybe not quite so easy... But to be fair i was initially going by this: https://www.instructables.com/2X72-Belt-Grinder/ What do you think of this motor for a 50x2000mm...

"You can make your own cheaper than buying it, but since the folks that make them are logging serious man-hours rather than being able to mass produce to meet a high demand, you are paying for a humans time." I think thats the big take away. These things are pretty niche, (hobby sized) so we...

I've got a meeting with them for free (subsidised by the UK gov) I have no idea if it fits the criteria yet.

    Home made Anvil?

Nice idea... sand would work well if compacted in and then welded shut. Would also reduce vibrations. If I weld some extra plat on top of the square bar to a thickness that sorts out the impacts the weight I need will be sorted by the sand. I could also add hatches so I could empty to the sand...

On another topic.. why are 2x72 grinders so damn expensive? They look simple as hell to make.

Yep. Love that guys shitty mill vids, very useful, and he's funny. I've found a drill that doesn't use a morse taper but uses a milling taper, and with some custom mods I can use it with solid lateral force pulling on it. It seems to good to be true, but to test it out it's only going to cost me...

I'm experimenting with a drill press conversion with a twist. Found a very cheap and very solid drill to do this conversion with. I'll do a video once I get it sorted. Wish me luck, it's a bit of a crazy plan.

Great job on making a decent knife. You want critique.. OK. Well from looking at the pic its a bit rough in a few places. Looks like you made some mistakes on the pin hole drilling as it looks like some glue has had to fill around those holes. If you dont have a pillar drill yet, would be a...

    Home made Anvil?

Could I make an anvil by casting some concrete with rebar sticking out the top. Getting some decent flat solid steel, say 5kg's worth and drilling holes for the rebar, welding it to the steel, then grinding it off to get a flat finish? Could add some kind of silicone between the concrete and the...

Thought about it overnight. No water pump just a hose attached to a tap. Have the fluid drain into the mains drain out the bottom container. You remove all the dust straight down into the sewers. No cleanup required. The above diagram is useful however if you want to re-use the iron filings for...

Like this. You could even stop the water pump let the dust dry then run the vacuum to suck up all the dust after it has dried. Maybe add a U bend between the air inlet and the vaccuum pump and the water pump. (the air being a toilet water trap, the water one using gravity to let the iron fall to...

Great idea. Like a beer tank valve that lets the gas escape. Maybe you could try a system like you get on rapid wine decanters. Where you have the wine traveling fast down a centre column with the air coming in one two sides via drill holes. So run water constantly into the main chamber and suck...

Before I saw the video I assumed it would have a fan to suck the dust in, with a electrocmagnet to capture the steel. Wouldn't work with non ferr metal though.
