    kirinite buffing?

Right from USAKNIFEMAER SITE: This is a brand material called Kirinite (TM). It has very intense bright metal pearl coloring. This material is a tough as Corian(tm). You can get matching pistol grips from Eagle Grips. It machines beautifully and is a pleasure to work with. Simply shape using...

    Polishing my planer blade knife

Walt - I'm a litle confused by this statement you made on post 31 - "I did and have one blade to finish shaping and grinding then off to heat treat." If you havent gotten blad too hot working it, why would you send to have HT. Isn't it already hardened?

    how long is too long?

I have always taken the still warm to touch knife right from HT to temper as I was taught that way. I turn on oven just prior to HT, then right after when I can touch the blade wipe it down and go right into temper cycles - Not sure, in reality, that it matters, but that's the way I do it.

    Polishing my planer blade knife

Looking better - I would think it would be a lot easier to do that without the handle and guard in place. You could have also annealed it to work on if you plan on heat treating it again.

I am shooting high for an idea

And when doing damascus, you will need to get to know your forge well as temperature control and reducing environments help facilitate the weld by offering the right environment for forge welding. Many people use gas forges, but I do fine with coal.

This is what I mean about the handle....You can see it is a longer piece of the actual stock so it wont break off. Saves time and frustration.

33ton log splitter converted to hydraulic press for Damascus

Self-Made - Believe this is one of them. On a lot of these, I sandwich a thicker piece into billet towards the end to offer contrast. In this case it was 15N20. Alternatively, can use 1095 and get center to be black.

33ton log splitter converted to hydraulic press for Damascus

Self Made - Yes, I did make a knife. If I can find pics, will post. Wolfe - Controls are not changed in any way. The nice thing about this is the whole setup goes on and off easy and the operation remians the same. Thanks for looking guys!

I am shooting high for an idea

The BEST way is to use a longer piece of the actual material that is being formed into damascus. You will see many people struggle with the handle breaking off and needing to be re-welded on and using a longer piece of the actual stock prevents this.

33ton log splitter converted to hydraulic press for Damascus

There's one bolt holding each piece on. This video I took shows it fairly well. The little guide pieces I talk about are not being used anymore, so it's as simple as it can be http://youtu.be/Gi6tysTO5DE

Its interesting that you ask about making damascus and I would encourage you to try it. My damascus making skills far exceed my ability to forge a knife. When I started blacksmithing as a hobby, Damascus was my main goal and many people tried to talk me out of it stating it took advanced skill...

    His and hers hunting knives

Wall E - No hard feelings. You asked, so we gave some advice. I would add one other thing beyond the advice to watch lots of videos. One of the biggest pieces of advice I took home was to not grind or work on knives if distracted or in a hurry. At a minumum, you will destroy the knife. At...
