Quench Wars! -- Side-by-side quench test

Sorry to monkey things up for you :( How were you judging the normalization temps? Did you have a pyrometer at the forge door, etc? I just got my Evenheat and I plan to use it for every stage of heating that isn't forging. This means normalizations, stress relief/spheroidizing, tempering...

Quench Wars! -- Side-by-side quench test

Rusty, Out of curiosity, why are you not normalizing with the kiln? It seems to me that introducing an uncertain set of temps from a forge at a stage such as normalization could severely skew results. For example, let's say one piece gets overheated a bit. This over heating would affect grain...

When do you make your mark?

I finish the blade out and mark before handling. A couple of reasons there. First off is that it's easier to get the stencil properly placed without a handle in the way. Second, on my damascus blades, I etch the mark before I etch the steel. It makes for a cleaner impression of my mark since...

    Is this the natural progression?

Sure there is! A lot of guys have started out with a hunk of railroad track, a random hunk of steel, or whatever as an anvil, a couple of firebricks or a coffee can full of kaowool and a propane torch for a forge, and a hammer from Home Depot. After that, it's files and sandpaper. :) I've...

    Favorite sand paper?

I like the Rhynowet. Cuts really well, keeps cutting for a long time, and I get it 20 minutes from the house at Supergrit. I use cutting lube for the bulk of the sanding and Windex on the last passes. -d

    Pics of your pups!

Here's an out-of-focus picture of my kids. Justice is a pitt/pointer mix with incredible stamina and lots of energy. Judge is the Rottie. He's 120lbs of pure muscle, but thinks he's a little lap dog. I'll have to find some better pics. -d
