    Finished another...

I have several blades getting close to being ready for handles so I'll be finishing a few here in the next few days. But here is one I finished this morning, Another piece of wood I bought from Jdale. I forgot what it was called. I think stabilized Maple Burl? Anyway here it is. I...

    Interim WIP

Shout out to JDale. I got this piece of 5000 year old Bogwood from him. He told me when He sent it that it was an odd shape, Kinda long and thin. Before it even arrived I had scribbled out a pattern, cut it out, ground it and heat treated it. When It got here the handle fit perfect. :) It...

    Interim WIP

Here is an update. Blade is finished and heat treated. Just for kicks since this is my first time working with 1084. I coated the spine and blade with furnace cement. I wanted to see what kind of hammon activity I would get with 1084. On such a small blade and with the holes I drilled, I didn't...

    Interim WIP

I'm waiting for handle material so most of my knives are on hold for a few more days. So I started another. In This case, I made a knife to fit a piece of wood as opposed to the other way around. Here it is so far. With each knife I make, I like to try something different. The holes in the...

    Why "Used" oil?

In all the discussions about quenchants, Motor oil is inevitably thrown into the discussion because, well, that is what some people have available to use. But the suggestion is always "USED" motor oil. Now, I do not use Motor oil but I do use Canola oil. I run a restaurant and have access to...

    This is My WIP

Here is the nightly progress. I am now just waiting for the handle material to get here. Heat treat and first polishing done. I will take the blade to 2000 grit later but 600 grit is where it sits for now. Also The new guard is almost done too.

    Heat treat question

no grain that you could see is probably a good thing. Files usually have a very fine grain and it is hard to see. I'm going to put a guess out that it had an inclusion of some sort that created a weak spot. Most likely the rest of your blade will be unaffected. Here is a handy pic. The...

    Heat treat question

A chunk breaking off just out of the fire and before quench shows it was under some stress. Do you do normalize before final heat and quench? I'm curious, Do you have a pic of the broken piece. The size and shape of the grain may give you some answers.

    Black Walnet Handles

Here is one I just made out of Black Walnut. I got the Walnut from My Brother in Law, who had a pile of it sitting in his back yard. I used his chainsaw to cut a slab and then cut a few pieces out of those with a table saw. I used wood hardener in a vacuum to "stabilize" it as best I could...

I bit off a huge chunk...

Holy cow, that is almost the same knife. Nice work, we have the same taste. Yours is cleaner than mine I better hide it. Ha I heat treated mine and started sanding before It got too late and I had to quit. My wife thinks me sanding in my reloading room sounds like a freight train in our...

    This is My WIP

I need some input here. I Made this guard from the same spring. I left the pits in it and wanted some input on if anyone has an opinion on it. Go? Or NO Go? ETA I fitted this guard to the knife and it was WAY to big. I modified it, but I also started a new guard. I'll Post pics of the...

    This is My WIP

When I first designed this knife it was a full tang knife. Then I realized that I don't know how to make or put on a tang for a full tang knife like this. I thought about it for a while and decided I would put the full tang on hold while I did some research and just make it a hidden tang...

    This is My WIP

Probably better here where I can make updates. Well, I was looking at the 2012 Bowie contest and just knew I would have to give one a try. I have done mostly smaller knives and this one, although not big by Bowie standards (probably not even medium) is by far the largest I have attempted. I...

    2013 Knife Making Progress

One more thing, Although I said draw straight across right or left, I don't actually do exactly that. I just think It will help you to keep that angle from creeping up. What I do Is, when I am extending the grind down the WIDTH of the blade (on in other words cutting the ricasso deeper and...

    2013 Knife Making Progress

For heaven sake. Stop starting knives and not finishing them. Put a handle on a couple of those and finish one already. Several of them look pretty good. I can tell from looking at them that you are changing your grind angle as you draw across. Keep the angle the same and draw straight right...
