Help, my pins are showing (how embarassing...)

This all makes good sense to me. I appreciate the detailed explanations. Next time one of you is attaching a bolster, I would love to see close up pictures of: 1) Pins in the bolster before peening and 2) After peening... I have been leaving about .075 to .100 stick out on the pins before...

Help, my pins are showing (how embarassing...)

Fred and Rudy, Thanks, sounds about right. I will watch my taper carefully and peen more thoroughly... How deep do you take the chamfer? I am worried that after I peen, the grind and shape the bolster that I will grind past the chamfer while shaping. The more I think about it, I guess the...

Help, my pins are showing (how embarassing...)

Yah, that is pretty much what I did... but I used a tapered reamer instead of a countersink. Was that a mistake? or did I not peen them correctly?

Help, my pins are showing (how embarassing...)

So I finished my 5th knife and am a little frustrated because I can barely see the pins on the bolster...just one side. I have not had this issue on my other knives. I am not exactly sure the nature of my error. 1/8" Boslter and pins are 416 stainless. I cut a small chamfer after I drilled the...

    Clamping leather

Dwayne, thanks for the tip! As a new knife maker, I appreciate this info too. I was actually thinking that Wallace was talking about clamping the welt when gluing after it is dry. I have used pieces of paint stir sticks for this. What do you use?

    Vertical Tool Rest

Hey Guys, Sorry for the slow response, I have been out of town on business. I don't have any other pictures, but will try to take more tonight when I get home. Thanks for the input. I kind of figured that the grinding motion will take some practice, and that it may be more akward than if it...

    Vertical Tool Rest

I made a new tool rest and wondered if anyone has tried this... It is a vertical rest so I can grind the spine and finger grooves on my fixed blades square. The picture shows it mounted to my 8" wheel, but will likely use it on my small wheels. I like how the ubergrinder rotates 90 degrees to...
