What items would you carry in a basic survival kit?

I had forgotten about this until the young lady brought it up. Another idea to conserve water is a small pebble under the tongue to keep the saliva glands working while on the trek in between water breaks. More thoughts?

What items would you carry in a basic survival kit?

Great point on dental care. There are some emergency dental kits on the market as well. I heard a long time ago that chewing on a green hardwood twig will do the trick for toothbrush replacement. Anyone have any thoughts as to this??

What items would you carry in a basic survival kit?

If I can add to the small package idea, some thin wire for a snare, chocolate for instant energy along with the powerbars, razor blade, prescription meds packed in cotton, needle and thread, unwaxed dental floss and I very much like the Esee arrowhead on the market. The shovel idea is a good one...

The Legend of the Bowie Knife

This is a great thread! In Blade last year there was a super on going story about the origin of the Bowie. I have read it twice since. Like Scalphunter my first was the Western W49, the obsession began from there! My favorite of the first Bowie styles is the Shively or Shivley(sp).

How do you deal with rust?

This is funny, you and I spoke about this about a month ago. WD works great for me keeping off rust and removing it as well. It also is excellent for removing nasty pine pitch from the stainless knives.

    Survival Rig

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm not quite there yet with my crafting, the pouch took me about 4 hours. I'm still pluggin' away though! I'll post up some pictures of the big knife under the choppers thread in a bit.

    Survival Rig

Thanks Mike. I'm looking forward to a full tang Carter version of this big knife. It will be much more tough without having to worry about the hollow handle breaking. I hope that you get the whole rig by the end of the week to examine. She'll be up for sale after that!

    Survival Rig

Thanks Boss! What can you tell me about the Soviet Spetznaz survival knife? Sorry I didn't include a pic of it. The one thing that comes to my mind is the hollow handle which is held on by a nut in the bottom of the handle. It's carbon steel and I "blued" the blade after cleaning it up.

    High Desert Winter Bulls

Just outside of Evanston Wyoming. They were sent to me by my survey manager who got them from a sheriff's deputy while closing the road. Where I live about 220 miles east there is another similar herd.

Saying Goodbye To My Best Friend

I shed a few tears for you. It brings back the hard memories of when my elder Yellow Lab "Ask'em" went to sleep. The last thing my dear friend heard was "we're goin' for a ride". He too went at home. Remember the good times and cherish your time together. There are a lot of people that could...
