My first knife and Kirinite handles

You put a lot of challenging details on that knife, there is nothing to be embarrassed about. It looks great, now go make some more. Each you do will look better than the last.

    respirator cartridges

I have not been able to use them yet but my next purchase will be the Multi-Vapor cartridges for handle materials and anything I think might have fumes of some sort from boss, I have not had any issues with the P100 filters when grinding steel. I will keep an eye on this thread, maybe someone...

    Design Critique

Looks good, the only critique I have is the handle may be small for someone with large hands but depending on the expected user a smaller handle may be fine. I usually like more belly and a narrower blade but that is just preference, me being a relatively new maker I cannot give the best advice...

    CNC cutting knife blanks

A while ago I met someone who does CNC work locally and we talked about having him cut out blanks,I know some ways for cutting out blanks make some things a pain but I'm unsure about how well CNC works for my use. Also, how much does it cost for other ways to have blanks cut out? I won't likely...

forgot a hole for handle pin

Okay, I just heated the handle twice, waiting for it to cool, I just kept an ice cube on the edge due to being paranoid about messing it up. Will update once it cools and I can try to drill it. -Cameron

forgot a hole for handle pin

The steel is 1084. How high would I need to heat the tang to sufficiently soften it and wouldn't it be easy to overheat the blade doing this?

forgot a hole for handle pin

I sent off a batch of knives for HT but forgot that the drill bit I had been using gave up the ghost with 2 of 3 holes drilled on one knife. So I bought a carbide bit from Tracy but when I try to drill it (high speed w/ lots of cutting lube) my old drill press just begins to vibrate and the work...

    steel thickness for knives

You can work about any size of steel you prefer depending on blade style but usually you want to keep weight as low as possible and you don't want the handle to feel chunky. I like 1/8" best because it helps keep weight low, and works well for what I make, usually Mid size hunter/utility knives.

Trying to make my first knife.

I second the 1084 from Aldo. I do stock removal and send out for HT so I'm not much help with the forge but It might be easiest to start with stock removal then move into forging later. Not that you can't do it, but it is cheaper to just start out.

    KITH official pictures thread

I received my knife yesterday made by Dan Pierson, and I couldn't be happier. This is the first custom I have had, and put any other kitchen knife I have used to shame. This thing cuts like a dream, I have had to think of meals where I need to cut something just to use this knife. it looks even...

    Knife finances

Thanks to everyone who contributed, I think I'm going to go the way of Microsoft excel for now. If I...

working with stabilized wood and G10 liners

I am putting the handle scales on my KITH knife and I plan on using Madrone burl with hunter orange and brown G10 liners. I have never worked with wood or G10 so are there any warnings/tips for working with them? I know I have to be careful or the wood will scorch and that the fiberglass from...
