Maxim oil is now selling Park #50.

Lee Neves at Maxim oil just contacted me to let me know he has P#50 available. He's selling it in 5gal buckets for $16 a gal. He is also developing his own brand of 7sec oil, although it's not available yet. Thought I'd let you all know.

one for the wall of shame!

Here's my worst crack yet. 1095, water quenched from 1500 for 2 sec and then into oil. I was going by my new pyrometer which is reading lower than my old one, I think I need to calibrate it! the old one must be right on the money. for your enjoyment and my shame......

Where to BUY fast Quench like Parks 50?

A pump is probably the simplest solution. as for the poly maintenance, Lee says to just replace your quench once a year but I've heard elsewhere that it's more complicated. If everything boils off at the same rate then there's no change in the concentration and no need to test or maintain the...

Where to BUY fast Quench like Parks 50?

Yea Rudy, lee said that he thinks it may be the best quench for 1095. He seems to know his stuff about quenching. the only caution he gave me about the PQ 90 was that it needs to be agitated well during the quench, like a pump in the tank or a little propeller. I'll have to work something out...

    McMaster Quench

The dark black color is from the tar. I can get better results on 1095 with a two sec dip into brine and then finish in the Mcmaster-11 but I recommend using something faster with more control.

    Pyrometer recommendations?

It doesn't hurt to keep one around. I haven't bought one of these but I know the proprietors of this store and there prices are reasonable. http://sundanceglass.com/pyrometer.htm

Where to BUY fast Quench like Parks 50?

I spoke to lee at Maxim oil. He's making his recipe 7-8 sec oil and he's getting a drum of Parks #50. During our conversation I think I convinced him that there's a big hole in the fast quench oil market that needs to be filled. here's what he says. "Mr. Barton; Thank you for your interest...

Hey crash, welcome. USAknifemaker.com usually has some peel-ply but I didn't find it right now, maybe check back now and again, Tracy puts stuff up on his website as he gets it. I think I know the type of coarse material you're talking about, I've got a few sheets around my shop I use for...

Uri Hofi's forging style, is it worth learning.

Good for you cooter, you cant let anything you keep you from doing what you love. I broke my collar bone a few years back in a motorcycle accident and it still gives me trouble, especially during these cold, damp Oregon winters. I picked up a hofi style hammer from the boss dogs store, he has...

Mc Master-carr 11 second oil question

Thanks for doing the leg work Todd. It never occurred to me to call! I've done a couple blades with it so far and I find it to be a good quench for deeper hardening steels. I tried it on 1095 and while the edge came out OK it wasn't as good as I can get with brine. for 1095 I'm going to try a 2...

Mc Master-carr 11 second oil question

Well, I answered my own question. I just did a quench with the oil at 140f and it came out well, the edge skates a file at least.. I'll do an edge test in the next couple of days and post the results.

Mc Master-carr 11 second oil question

I'm familiar with the steel I'm using but I'm trying a new quench oil. many quench oils work best at a temp in the 150f range and I'm looking for someone who can verify the best temp for the Mcmaster-carr 11 sec. quench oil. Sorry if I wasn't clear. And thanks to anyone with info.

Chuck, at alpha knife supply sells some nice bearings in a nylon carrier for this purpose. his blade pivots are nice too, I started using them about six months ago and now use nothing else. Here's a link to his hardware page. http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/hardware.htm

    Certificate of Authenticity

I send a "how to care for your new knife" document with each knife. On it I describe the knife in detail and state the name of the buyer. I use a nice, heavy, recycled paper to print these on, it adds a nice touch.

    Putting on final edge

I did all of my grinding on a 1x42 from grizzly ($130) for a long time before I bought a KMG. and I still use the griz for a lot of things, it's a good investment. get the one with a 8" disk, you will probably use it a lot. you can get any belt you could want for it at trugrit.com. Good luck...

    my first scratch build.....

Nice work! I've not used spalted maple but what I use on my wood handles is three coats of neatsfoot oil, let it soak in between coats, and two or three coats of Renaissance wax, rub it in real good before and after each coat. I take the wood to 1500 grit paper before I finish. Hope this helps...

Uri Hofi's forging style, is it worth learning.

Hi guys, I've been doing my research on hammers and came across Uri Hofi. He claims to have an ergonomic forging method. Is anyone here familiar with this method, is it worth buying his DVD to learn. While I've been doing some forging, mostly mokume, I'm still new to forging steel. I've been a...
