    Cryogenic quenching question

Although off thread with regards to the steel in question I had a discussed with Uddeholm regarding sub zero. I was told for example that Elmax must go to a minimum of -100c -196c and be HELD, a simple drop to sub zero wont work to full effect. With regards to Vanax the sub zero is critical as...

    Chemistry help - Acid Etching

The steel is Markus Balach stainless Damascus and so I am going by their recommendations. Also I figured that the lower levels of strength are most likely safer. Hence I am going for just over the smallest practical volume for my needs at the moment and also erring on the weaker side. Also...

    Chemistry help - Acid Etching

Hopefully there are a few who are good at chemistry here as I need help with a Hydrochloric acid solution which I need to mix in order to etch a couple of stainless steel knife blanks I have ground out. The hydrochloric acid I bought is a 36% strength mixture. The volume of my etching chamber...

    Double sheath help

Not sure if anyone could help with this. I don't make my own leather sheaths due to tendon issues in my arm and so have a leather worker make them for me who is superb. But on the last double knife combo I sent him he kept hitting issues with the sheath as he doesn't normally do double sheaths...

Wood stabilising oven / tempering oven project.

I would go with the foil wrapped ceramic wool as you do not need rigidiser with it as the wool as securely in the foil pouches with are several sheets thick. They hold in place a doddle as if cut snug the are rigid when put in place. I think they would also be a great option on the top of the...

Wood stabilising oven / tempering oven project.

Thanks .....I honestly cannot believe how good the oven is. Totally converted from the original oven. I am eager to cook the wooden blocks I have had soaking in juice for the last two weeks, pretty sure they will cure much better than previously as the high heat led to bleed out. later this...

Wood stabilising oven / tempering oven project.

Oven had a test this eve, with a meat pie as all I had. Cooked to perfection with a variation of 3C for the 20 mins it was cooked, cant moan at that. :):)

Wood stabilising oven / tempering oven project.

And here is the insulation on the inside. I had a couple of other images which wouldn't upload of the sheet in my hand fitted to base of the oven and also the external wool on the oven. You can see the readings on the PID which are the target value in green and the process value in red. Note...

Wood stabilising oven / tempering oven project.

Following on from Gliden07's superb thread about making a tempering oven I decided to do my own with the help of my father and Timgunn who is also on the forum. The PID control I chose was the Inkbird which was the UK version and combined with a K type thermocouple along with the largest volume...

    Future Cut Throat razor

Something I have always wanted to make is a cut throat razor, well that and lots of other blades, I think the list will never end! My question is, what thickness of stock and steels are suitable for a cut throat please, oh and in MM ;) Now as I have extremely painful tendons in both arms I...

    Epoxies and unheated shops

I have learnt my lesson with epoxies and cold temps and so I glue everything inside the house. In your situation keep the blanks, scales pins etc. in the house until needed so they are up to temp. Then glue up in the garage and place the knives inside something like a cheap cooler box or...
