    Scandi Grind Finish Problems

The slow way is to use the best stones you can in progressively finer grits. I use Naniwa-chosera stones as the come with a built in stand and give excellent feed back. I use a 600 and 1000 grit stone but for a polish go higher. Stones must be soaked and kept wet through out the process in order...

Full tangs, pins, scales, and does epoxy really hold anything on steel?

Best thing I have done recently is go over to G Flex, I love the stuff. I thought Two Tonne was good but the G Flex is thicker and doesn't catalyse when I have added pigments, Two Tonne has and gone off like a rocket and so hot the glue pot was extremely hot too the touch. The G Flex seems to...

    What respirator do you use?

Same as I use. An excellent respirator which I chose after researching the same as you. The important thing to remember when folk are buying them is face size and fit. My face is small so I have to use the smallest version and the way to test if the mask fits is to take the filters off , cover...

    Hand Stitching idea……

The reason I decided to source myself an excellent leather smith was mainly due to the thread holes. I just couldn't get the hang of it and was getting pretty fed up with it. In the end I did the ground work and found someone who does stunning sheaths which definitely are the finishing touch to...

    Question about tempering

Thanks for all the input gents. Turned out to be an interesting and informative thread. I am erring on possibly converting my old toaster oven to a PID as I just found out my dad has one in his garage......so I can do it for free. Or should I wish to get a more up to date PID etc it is cheap as...

    Stropping compound?

Chromium oxide powder mixed into a thin slurry, something like the tip of a teaspoon handle with 3 rain drop sizes of water drop. Use a paint brush to spread on the board. Also use the thinnest leather you can for your board the there is little give in the leather. I have made hundreds of board...

    Question about tempering

It was an electric oven. I tried it again last night but it still lies as to the actual temperature but that's no issue as I can just set that via an temperature probe which I can have via a thermocouple in the oven / thermometer outside. I reckon a few fire bricks inside will stop any fluctuations.

    Question about tempering

Thanks for the replies and I take on board work your saying epically where guys have converted them themselves. Even if the oven failed as a tempering oven then it would surely be a huge step up for my stabilising. If I did this the oven would have a complete strip down by my father who is a...

    Question about tempering

I do a bit of wood stabilising and at the moment I use a small toaster oven. The oven is totally unreliable and so as I am also looking into heat treating my own steel and building a kiln I thought I would convert my toaster oven too a PID controller/thermocouple/body/wiring upgrade where...

    WIP. Curve backed bolsters

Thanks for the reply Von. Yes I see what you mean by the size of pins but certainly in my case its the customers who want larger pins , especially where mosiacs are concerned. Often I have to steer clear buyers sometime as sizes asked for that really would look bizarre

    WIP. Curve backed bolsters

Thanks for uploading this in such detail. I shall be adding too the ever growing list of favourites I have :) I also notice the drum sander but what other methods do you use for this part of the process ? Bolsters are something I have never made and intend to in the future. I think I will...

    Curved blade grinding help please.

I think the magnetic platens will work but I decided to take mine right back to scratch and straight away I found errors that had been there all the time such as a few parts slightly out of square etc. I think by the time the will be finished there will he a huge improvements. Edit...… Well I...
