Thanks for looking guys. Larry, I was actually going with satinwood I got from you(?) on this one but they liked the bamboo better. Next one maybe. DeMo, You know she absolutely needs one. Rudy

    NWG platen/belt issue, need help/thoughts

Most of the problem is that angle iron isn't a true 90 degree angle. I've always made my own platens, some out of aluminum but mostly steel. If you really look, most have a radius on each leg and sometimes a slight angle. You have to tweak something on each one, draw filing, grinding or mill. If...

    NWG platen/belt issue, need help/thoughts

Grind a couple of U shaped shims with a taper and slide them in behind the platen then tighten the bolts. OR...fold some HT foil or any foil for that matter and put it on the backside of the platen bolts, then tighten the bolts. Both these will kick the platen forward on the right side. It...

    First Framelock WIP

Since you're working with minimal tools.... I'd zero the hole with the last drill bit used, then switch out to an endmill for whatever size bore you need. Endmills are cheeper than counterbores. Use your depth stop on the drill press too. Looking good so far. Rudy

can anyone tell me what type of wood this is?

How's tricks Keith ? It certainly doesn't look like the ironwood I sent you ages ago. That knife doesn't look like it bends in the middle either. What's up with that ? Its tough to tell by the pic but I'll lean towards Mesquite (?). Only because I'm working on mesquite now...everything starting...

Broke in a cork belt, belt broke and tore my finger...

OUCH ! Justin, Next time use the flat edge of a (broken) concrete patio block with moderate pressure. It does in seconds what diddling with a steel bar does in many minutes. The finish is even too. Sorry for your loss, Rudy

Craftsman 2x42 Grinder, Mods and Troubles

All my machines have worked fine right out of the gate, including the Baders and home builts for 30 plus years. There's nothing cheap about them. Waldors came here to solve an existing problem, not get a sermon on could'ves and should'ves. If he's got a pulse and a heart beat, I'm sure he's well...

Craftsman 2x42 Grinder, Mods and Troubles

Totally agree with Ed and Travis and yes, Im fortunate enough to have quality machines. In the meantime lets focus on your problem. *Try the simplest fix first....tape is your friend. Try a few wraps of tape on the top idler wheel going from the center to the side you want the belt to climb to...

    A new definition of "flat"

Not quite the glass but I've been using ceramic tile for 8-9 years. The 2'x2' smooth black ceramic tile will last the rest of my natural life cutting 2"x6" liners. It wears well and the cost at the time was about 4 bucks. It also saves a lot of time compared to flattening my platens every couple...

First experience with a grinding disc and belt

If you want a good laugh..... I started a section in my shop note book years ago of the daily stupid things that went on in the shop. Just quick notations like grinding your knuckles or burning your hand leaning on the forge. Reading them years later makes you laugh and feel good that most of...
