List of things to keep telling yourself while in the shop:

Yup, If I can't find what I just put down....I go in the house and it's usually on the counter or kitchen table even though I don't remember being in the house all day. Or else I look in the part of the shop that I was never in recently, that I can remember anyway. It's getting to the point that...

    Stacked Leather Handle Help

I guess it's time to spill the beans. I've had many requests for the ins and outs and WIPs over the years but never got around to it. Here's my way of doing it after about 30 years of trial and error with the best results to date. *Start with a finished blade with the tang about 1/3 higher...

Old miniature knife from the 50's

Imperials' home was Providence, Rhode Island. 20 minute ride from my shop. That's a well thought out gift for a knife guy L'il Bu.......errrrrr Justin. I remember winning a couple of those knives as a kid when the carnival or fair came to town in the early 60's. Probably the only prize i'd...

    Selling knives

OH YEAH ! The constant phone calls make you want to chuck thier knife in the swamp. The 'visits' are even worse if you're unlucky enough to be dealing with a local. They expect to see thier knife in your hands upon walking in...as if you have nothing better to do. Just one of these experiences...

    Lighting a forge

I think you already mentioned the K.I.S.S principle. The long neck lighters for grills work about as good as anything. Some times the striker from my torches. Always done from the side of the forge opening so you don't ignite your paw. **Probably most important is to turn on your air BEFORE...

    soft platen

I have some hard felt kicking around somewhere. I'll have to dig it out and give that a whirl, although I've kind of mastered the cork over the last few years. Every trick helps. Rudy

    soft platen

Bill, I use the cork platen only if I'm going for a high mirror polish with belts from 1200 to 4500. The Trizacs work very well by themselves but the cork seems to squeeze some magic out of them. The cork totally eliminates belt bump and gives me feedback as far as pressure against the platen...

    soft platen

Cork tape. Besides building rods, the cork tape comes in handy on the platen too. I get 1"x1/8"x25' rolls from a fishing/rod building supply. The tape is peel-off sticky back and two pieces side by each fit perfectly on the platen. Make seperate platens out of aluminum angle. After a while the...

Anyone use one of these on a forge??

Like mentioned, the shaded pole motors have little to no Uuumph, although I have an electric wall clock that still runs from the 70s (?). These blowers are available with regular motors, which I have. 3 years and counting. Rudy

Anyone use one of these on a forge??

Yes, Some of us do. This particular blower puts out 84 CFM, works like the dickens. This was a test run before adding the gas needle valve. The blower worked out just right but if yours puts out too many CFM for the size forge, you may have to use a gate valve to control air flow. Beats the...

How do you pack and/or carry knives in transit?

Probably the best idea I've seen is a heavily padded rifle/shotgun case, they're fairly cheap and secure. You can also get Pelican cases in different sizes. Personally I pack mine in my violin case along with my Tommy gun. Rudy

Found hardness tester, opinions before I buy?

That's short money and it looks pretty clean. You might want to ask about the calibration history on it. If it was done by a tech there may be a history on the inside of the pendulum/spring door. Good luck. Rudy

    Heat treating outside in winter?

Remist, Just go ahead and do it. As long as you're not taking the hot blade on a ten mile hike before quenching. The important part here is to get your oil up to temp.....heat a couple of pieces of scrap steel and heat the oil to or at least near temp, you want some viscosity to the oil. (unless...

    Knifedog awards

I have to agree with a lot of Johns' thoughts but my main focus, like many here is the participation part. In my case for example, the nomination for 'educator' and the 3 votes first of all raised my eyebrows in surprise and kind of made me smile. The smile represented the disbelief that at...
