Week 3 Voting Thread is CLOSED for Week 3 Photo Contest

It's really tough to judge the whole pic and not the knife. This week I'm suckered in by detail and clarity which J Doyles' and Bruce Bumps' pics jumped out at me with of course Buddys' pic. As a side note.....I regret to announce that after this weeks' shenagins, I'm easing out of the...

    Grinder questions. ..whats new

It all depends on how handy you are. Take a look around this place for home builts http://www.2x72grinders.com/?forum=405288. There's even a wooden one. All in all, build or buy the best you can afford and learn to use it to it's full potential. Poke around this place...

    CruForge V temper issues

http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/Pictures/Info/Steel/CruForgeV-DS.pdf Your quench temp is a bit low, seems the sweet spot would be 1525*. Is your RC tester or method accurate ? Are you testing a clean blade or scale ? Rudy

Drilling handle out for hidden tang?

Keep some threaded rod in various sizes around the shop. It makes a pretty handy broach in a pinch. Grind or file the front edge at a roughly 45 degree angle and you're ready to go. Rudy

    Asiatic Water Buffalo

Wrong Mr Rostig. What you're mistakingly pointing out are the .015 brass liners under the horn. Although I'm sure it will happen in time, as I'm holding this particular knife in hand right now the scales are fine. The customer was warned of the hazards and after delivery this coming week, I am at...

    Need help on a handle

It's your call Justin but I don't think any type of surface finish is the answer to a soft punky grain. Several coats of rubbed in Tru-oil will give a durable surface finish though. Rudy

    Need help on a handle

I have to agree with John on the over rated part. I never liked the extra weight it gives to the material. But yeah, try and sell a knife without it now. I've even gotten to the point where I have misgivings about letting an untreated knife out the door. Some of us remember the days before...

    Need help on a handle

Justin, If you determine that it's not stabilized or just partially, open a quart can of satin polyurethane and give the handle a swimming session for a couple or three hours then let dry for a day or so in a warm place. This will aid in sealing it and makes sanding so much easier. I do this to...

Week 2 Photo Contest Voting CLOSED

Tough is an understatement, so many outstanding shots. To me, I kept coming back to Buddy Thomasons' pic......It's flawless, how do you do that ? So Buddy has my vote this week. Ebbtides' shot looks so 'fluid', it's like you can reach out and touch it. John Doyles' shot is crisp and clear (as...

Yup to everything above. It's workable on a sloooow grinder with a quick light touch but be really careful on the buffer, the wheel will melt right into it. Did we mention the stink ? Usually happens with the high grit belts running too fast, for me anyway. Use sharp new belts, don't try one...

    Am I headed twards headache?

Use it up. People have been putting wooden handles on lots of things for thousands of years. Some of us even remember a time before 'stabilized' wood. Check your material carefully for its' intended use and put some effort into sealing and finishing it. There's so many products available now...

enviroquench and speed quench 1 versus heatbath 50

In my case, using a 3 gallon quench tank. A simple line on the inside of the tank would be enough monitoring since you're presumably only adding water (?). The circulation posed the biggest problem since my quench tanks are tubes and portable. I wondered how well it would work without...

enviroquench and speed quench 1 versus heatbath 50

http://www.maximoil.com/products.htm#Heat Treating Products Rob is right. I looked into it also. The way it was explained to me was that agitation, temperature and concentration was crucial to the process. Every time you quench a blade/s you alter the concentration of the mix via evaporation...

VOTING CLOSED Dec 8-15 - Voting Photo Contest Week 1, Dec 1-7

Tough call between 3 of them but I gotta go with Fredsedge. His photo kept my eye pegged to the knife although the composition was nice too. I know deep down inside everyone really likes mine though. Rudy
