Welcome aboard Rome, I live in the NW metro myself. Have yet to make my first knife, life just kind of got in the way and ive been busy making stuff for the shop. Im currently limited to stock removal but would love to one day try my hand at forging and work with some damascus. Got to get a few...

    Grinder questions. ..whats new

I built my own 2x72 as well. didnt have the budget for VFD etc so went with step pulley's. So far I just have the grinder, tool arm with platen and a tool arm for slack belt. I just ordered the parts to build a tool arm to hold disc grinder as well as a buffing wheel. Ive also got some neat...

Yea, unfortunately that didnt specify a compound to use if any, so I was just looking for a bit more detail from others who have used it.

    kirinite buffing?

Ive never worked with kirinite before but have a slab I hope to put to use shortly. To that end I was wondering if anyone had any guidance on how to finish it? Buffer compound recommendations etc? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A good camera? How much to spend?

Now days any of the DSLR's from major manufacturers can take phenomenal pictures. The camera quality today is such that out of the camera images are such that there isnt a lot of difference (aside from megapixels) between the low end and high end dslr's. That being said image processing software...

    Dust collection

Ive taken the 5 gallon bucket of water a little further. We bought a vacuum cleaner called a "rainbow" that doesnt use bags or cyclonic action to trap dirt, it draws through a tank water and therefor doesnt clog at all or lose suction. What I did was take some misc parts from rockler and a 5...

    propane burner question

Im making a 3/4 propane burner following the plans laid out in Michael Porters book "Gas Burners". The 3/4" burner calls for a straight burner nozzle but has a flared choke. Has anyone made a flared nozzle as well and is it worth the hassle? Any other comments from anyone who has made/used...

    what about this lightbox

ripstop nylon makes a great difuser. There are some premade panels as well with pockets in the corners that can be stretched over a frame, like simple pvc. I have a few sizes of those and they work well

Care and feeding of high carbon steel

So high carbon steel is a bit more susceptible to the elements. Whats the recommended way to keep a high carbon steel knife looking like new? Is oil the preferred method? What about "gun wax"? The wax would seem to be a little nicer on its surroundings and not leave the oily residue.

    Flat platen question?

I believe you want it right in line. I ran a straight edge between my wheels abd slide the platen up to it so I knew everything was inline.

    Recommend a good starter steel.

Been away for a little bit with some household projects (some may have seen my 2x72 grinder wip in wip forum) but I have my grinder built some files, belts, sandpaper, and handle material and some basic designs. For me, half the fun is making my own tools etc so with that in mind I was looking...
