    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

I decided to go ahead and use some all thread to move the motor sled. Picked up a couple pillow blocks and added a block of aluminum under the sled which I drilled and tapped for the all thread. Picked up a handwheel, did some cutting on the table saw to make room for some additional sled travel...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Yea, thats definitely my plan but I have to put a little thought into the design as a whole to prevent having to change things up and/or redo them at a later time. I think some of what appears to be belt shimmy (for lack of a better term) is largely do to some discoloration on the belt itself...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Had a wicked storm roll thru last friday, uprooted a big pine thats next to the house. Had to spend my time taking care of that instead of working on my grinder so didnt get as much done as I had hoped. I had been tossing around a lot of ideas on how I wanted to mount the motor. Since my design...

    Keeping up the fight

Ive been a gym rat most of my life and am 45 now. I was out of the gym a couple years due to a hectic life around 40 and lost motivation. Hit 265lbs and >30% BF, no endurance, poor sleep, no concentration etc. Cleaned up eating habits and started working out again at home for 6 months and...

Setting the stage for price increases.

I have yet to make my first knife so this may be a little premature. For now I am looking for a hobby where the finished product doesnt take up a lot of space and that I can do at home, specifically when im on call and need to be close to a computer. I have plenty of friends and family who could...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

A little more progress tonight. Got the timesert in for the tool arm lever, the handle for the tracking arm and notched out the flat platen plate to give me some more clearance on the left side. That old rockwell tablesaw its sitting on will be its home, the motor went in it some time ago so I...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Ken, The tracking wheel threads dont get a lot of pressure AND its going through 1" thick stock so likely wouldnt require a time sert. The tool arm however is only going through 1/2" stock and will be holding the arm in place against the tension of the spring. It very well could be sufficient...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Thanks. Since Im using aluminum Im a little worried about the strength/longevity of the threads for spots that will constantly be articulated like the tracking wheel adjustment knob and the tool arm retaining lever so I used a "time-sert". Its in essence a thread repair product that has a steel...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

You guys are right, I was thinking about that right after I posted. There is room for the plunge but not with a file guide so I will throw it on the mill and take some metal off. I made a little more progress tonight, put in the time-sert for the tracking wheel adjustment knob, and got the...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Been a little busy so havent made as much progress as I would have liked. I also ended up changing my mind on how to build the flat platen tool arm. I was originally going to have a small table as a secondary arm but I decided to just extend the arm holding the flat platen out a bit bast the...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Ill try and round up some basic measurements. Ive made a bit more headway (see pic below) and have some of the small stuff left like the tension spring for tracking arm. Ive got some misc knobs on order should have them tomorrow. Ive got a time-sert ill use to put in a tougher thread for the...

    silly noob question

Thanks Laurence! Thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for. How is the market for culinary compared to "other" knives? Im no pro chef or anything but I gotta say it sure is nice having a few nice knives in the kitchen. How would you go about pricing culinary knives as a new knife maker...

    silly noob question

I have yet to make my first knife but my home made 2x72" grinder is coming along and hopefully in the next 2 months I will have it up and running along with some supplies needed to start making some knives. Ive read forward and backward a multitude of knife making wips and tutorials as well as...

    Belt grinder?

If you looking at spending a decent amount on a drill press, and your looking at making folders, perhaps you want to consider a mill/drill, something like the grizzly g0704 perhaps.

    3 phase?

VFD's dont have an actual HP but often times they are specified as able to control a motor up to a certain HP. So I beleive what they mean when they say they got a 2hp VFD they mean it will run up to a 2 hp motor.

    Shopping for a new camera

The 180 with a crop sensor is actually about 30% longer and with a 2x extender should give you over 400mm so yes it would work for a long range lens. The question isnt really will it give you the reach, the question is will it provide enough light to allow a fast enough shutter for wildlife? A...
