    Leather Supplier

RJF Leather - IMO the best hides I've used in the last 50 years..........I used W & C for years but switched to RJF about two years ago with no regrets - hides are old time pit tanned from Portugal - he also sells shoulders which can be the "best" buy for sheath makers who don't/can't order a...

    mold on leather

Let dry until the mold turns to powder, vacuum off the loose powder. Wipe the entire pieces down with white vinegar and then wipe clean with clear cool water and a clean rag. Redo if need be. As for the dying should be no problem, deglaze before dying per normal, but it wont/hurt to test first.

    Quiver and bow case

Yep still kicking here Randy and the heat and smoke finally let up - the rains haven't been too bad here and they were sorely need after weeks of plus 90 F temps and humidity in the 3-10% range..... Garry - I don't count hours anymore but I'd guesstimate about 60 for this set. As for my beaded...

    Quiver and bow case

Still dealing with some chronic health issues (and other things) that have slowed me way down, but I finally got something done.... This is a pre-1850 quiver and bow case made of heavy brain tanned elk with early Cheyenne style pound bead work. Other deco includes fringe, brass beads, tin...

    Highlighting dye problems

I learned about using red ink many moons ago by some of the best leather crafters around and use it all the time, with zero problems. Red ink, in particular delible (i.e. washable/non pemanent - red is a transient color - one that will fade naturally, especially in sunlight) types, GENERALLY...

    Wrought Iron vs Cast?

With all due respect to Doug there are in fact several different types of cast iron, some even that is malleable and even forge able, but in general the most common cast iron is the high carbon brittle type. As for wrought iron - what makes it wrought is the process, take cast iron pigs heat and...

    Botched sheath

    1) RJF Leather out of New York state sells some of the finest double shoulders around and the price is in line with W & C, Herman Oak, etc. Size averages 13 sq ft - my last one cost just under $80.00 including shipping. 2) On the other hand over the last 50+ years I have used a fair amount...

    Antelope Horn?

With respect while pronghorn were often called goats in the past they are not in the same family. They are in fact the only remaining members of the Antilocapridae family, of which all other members are extinct. That along with being the only horned animal to drop it's horns makes them very...

    Leather sheath Loosening-up ?

wet forming alone will not keep the sheath tight - for that you need to use the cuir bouilli method - ie dampen the leather (not soaking wet but wet through) then heat to above 150°-160° F - at that heat the leather is changed at the molecular level

    Ferdco Pro 440R Machine

I agree with Outrider re: the stitching - in fact for years the Ferdco machines won the best stitching award from the Harnessmaker's Journal. Also the Ferdco is a bottom feed machine so the stitching is still controlled by a feed mechanism and not just by hand alone, if you're gluing your parts...

    Dag Trade Knife

Howdy Randy - VERY nice piece. That tabbed style sheath is a Blackfoot style (I've got several images of originals if you want them I can post them). Without seeing the original I can't say for sure but I'd bet the zigzag style of beading along the edge is what is known as a fret stitch...

    Latest Bowie

As always working with Tai is a pleasure even though it's also a challenge to match his workmanship and ideas. On this one it was a bit harder in some ways since the knife wasn't completed when I got it to make the sheath so I didn't have a real color scheme to work with and winged it (just...
